21. The only thing halfway decent is the aquarium, and...
that's kind of lame on many levels. Last time I was there some of the fish were sick, but there was still fun stuff to watch and do. The weather will probably suck too much to have the overpriced hot dog outside with the neat view of Philadelphia.

Anyway, Camden is one of the few places on the planet that I've been to that I would seriously suggest we build a wall around and then destroy-- it looked far beyond hope last time I was there.

The city might be better now, but the aquarium is still the only interesting thing I can think of for a few hours.

(Could buy some crack from the ex-mayor if he's out of the slam yet...)

There's a poignant, even affectionate essay on Camden by Lauren Grodstein. The rest of the book is equally good.

See link for details.

Philly is a much safer place

But that wasn't my comment

Go tell someone from North Jersey there is no difference between and South Jersey (or vice versa) and that's not gonna be a pretty site

56. Philly is not a much safer place than Camden
There are many nice areas of Philly. Some touristy, some not. I can't really say that about Camden. Unless burnt out row houses are your idea of nice. The Catholic church was doing a lot to reclaim some of the rotting carcasses of buildings there and move needy families into them, but I doubt that program has had that much of an impact.

35. Hookers work during the day too if that helps
Seriously, if despair has a smell, it smells like Camden. Which is sad because my parents talked about it as an idyllic place when they were growing up in the 40's and 50's. I was born in Cooper Hospital there as well. But thank God we left, and I have no more relatives living there to visit. Seriously, aquarium, shipyards, and get out.

Funny story about Camden. When I was getting my MSW, during one class the professor handed out various articles he wanted us to read. One of the articles was a comparison between two cities very close to each other that are economically polar opposites. CAmden and its neighbor Cherry Hill. It got even better when the author(s) was interviewing people I knew back there. And then it got sad seeing how far ingrained the blight is.

59. In the summer, there's usually quite a bit to do at the
water front such as Aquarium, minor league baseball, concerts at the tweeter center, battleship NJ. I'm not sure how much of it is going on in the winter. There's a train (PATCO) that goes into center city philly, easy to do. (There's also a path for walking/biking across the Ben Franklin Bridge). Going east on PATCO there's a few nice little towns such as Collingswood (where I live) and Haddonfield that are good for walking, shopping (sorta) , coffee , restaurants etc. PM me if you wish. have fun.
