I really am such a cynic that it alarms me. But, in a striking paradox, I can be all too gullible as well, so much so that it alarms me.

I'm an honest kind of guy and I expect the same from other people. Sometimes I'm wrong about people, but I find that if I am honest I don't usually have to worry about things.

the strange way that gas prices escalate around holidays when people drive a lot... is that just supply and demand, or is there a conspiracy to raise gas prices and make a bundle off travelers?

While that is not outside the realm of possibility, I am more inclined to think that the added demand allows individual vendors to make money when they know they can.

when the supply appears to be more than adequate... and what is price fixing other than your local consortium (informal even) set the prices.

I know that in a town I lived in, there was such a group, and they set the prices, and if someone undersold them, they as a group could undersell that station and take business away so they all had an uneasy truce to follow suit with the prices.
