Gathering good vibes for my kitty...

She went from being perfectly normal Saturday to critical condition this morning. Her WBC is 46,000. The vet is going to try to stabilize her today, and do an exploratory abdominal surgery tomorrow. Nothing showed up on the xrays, but there is a mass of some kind there.

I adopted "Baby" and her three male litter mates about 8 years ago, when a neighbor discovered them under her deck. She is a beautiful torti/calico mix. I have a feeling they are the offspring of a feral that I have been feeding for several years. Luckily, I was able to trap her, and get her to a vet for spay/shots.

Baby came through the surgery ok. There was no intestinal obstruction. She is suffering from acute kidney failure. The vet said her right kidney looked really bad. He took a biopsy, and we will know the results in a couple days.

I don't know if this is a one time type event, or if it will be something she will battle the rest of her life. She is strictly indoors, so I don't believe it was something toxic that she ingested.

I have had more cats than I can name, but for some reason; this little one has really got me worried. All eight of my kitties are "cast offs". It seems that those who need me find their way to my back door. I've already lost two of my sweeties in the last six months, one to a stroke, and the other to feline leukemia. I hope I don't lose this one.

Anyway, so far she is responding well to the antibiotics and IV hydration, and may get to come home Thursday or Friday. I am going to visit with her tomorrow.

I ask because IIRC the melamine-contaminated wheat gluten in pet foods earlier this year was causing accute kidney failure. I've been afraid to give mine anything with wheat gluten ever since.

I hope she continues to improve, and more good kitty vibes for her in the meantime.

He said damage to her kidney looked different than the tainted cat foods had caused. I feed her Science Diet Light, with about half a tablespoon of canned food mixed in. It's the same thing I feed 5 other kitties, and they are ok. I have no live house plants, and I don't think there is anything else around here that should could get into.

She looked pretty pitiful this afternoon, but did perk up a bit, as long as the vet assistant was out of her view. She is eating for them. Also, she hisses and bats at them when they mess with her, so I see that as a good sign too.

She will have to wear a collar for two weeks, which should be a lot of fun. My biggest problem will be keeping the other cats away from her, but I'll get it done.

Doc says she might get to come home tomorrow. Yea!!!

I hope she is much better very soon!
