DUers with bad tempers check in
jeez, i have such a fucking short fuse. how do you guys deal with it in general?

i usually just let it fly when my short fuse runs out. i get to release tension, terrify someone(s), and burn bridges.

occasionally though, i hold it in till i'm ready to burst. i'm doing that right now at work. it sucks, but in the meantime i'm plotting my sweet, sweet revenge.

5. you know what, i am pissed at Woolite right now, weird right?
how the fuck can a person be mad at detergent you ask, well i'll tell you.

I need Woolite HE and guess what, no one sells it so i send an email off to the people at Woolite telling them i can't find it and they send me a response telling me i can buy it at----wait for it-----

Wal-mart.

So i'm sitting here thinking of a reply to them that isn't loaded with expletives. I have a long fuse on most things but right now i am really fucking pissed off, WTF make a special trip to a company whose business practices i hate just so i can take care of "My fine washables"? Not fucking likely, hey Woolite maybe you should research the HE demographic and make your products available at places we actually shop. On top of that they suggested i purchase it online from them, the shipping cost was actaully more than the actual product.

6. I have a different problem. Long fuse with a powerful explosion at the end of it.
What I've learned over time is that often I can defuse the bomb by changing the anger into a wickedly twisted biting humor. When I can't I try to let it blow someplace where it can't hurt the wrong targets, like coworkers who have no part in it or family. I rant and rave when I'm home alone, for example.

Of course, sometimes both strategies fail. ;-)

8. whats your problem, anyway? ....
Yes. Very short fuse. I like to throw things, hit things. You know all those things like foam bricks and bats designed to relieve tension..I am the target audience.
But at work I keep my self contained. At home, since I live by myself I will give an angry shout after a bad day...

13. Horrific Nuclear Meltdown Temper
Combined with a huge vocabulary and enormous literary experience...I can destroy a friendship in moments with a few well chosen nasty phrases.

I have spent YEARS working on it.

It's a lot like the buildup to the first cannon sequence in the 1812 Overture...whether or not the cannons go off is now up to me, though, so they don't go off a lot.

I practice a whole plethora of anger management techniques, usually they work.

Asshole.

However if I encounter the few things here and there that CAN get me mad... well... then it ain't pretty.

26. I'm terrible
but I'm working on it.
A few months ago I was contacted by my first boyfriend from 37 years ago who still lives in England. I was very glad to hear from him but by the 4th email I told him to go fuck himself and that I would smack the snot out of him if I ever saw him again...all because he told me he liked Rudy Giuliani. He was really pleased to find out I hadn't changed one bit and I was still feisty, argumentative and would fight my corner. We have become good friends and now he says he's a Democrat. Seems he loved my short fuse when I was a 16 yr old teenager so it's not all bad.

36. lol, me too. Feel bad afterward, that is
because I've usually contained my temper until something stupid and insignificant happens, and then I let all the anger and resentment out.

So I'm practicing getting mad when it matters, not pretending that nothing is wrong. ;-)

But if I see an animal, child or elderly person being hurt or harassed, I'll go batshit insane on the person doing the harming and won't feel bad at all.

28. When I was younger...
...I had a VIOLENT temper and a very short fuse. I once knocked out every tile in our bathroom with the telephone receiver during a phone conversation with my boyfriend. A boyfriend cheated on me in college, and I ripped the railing out of the concrete in front of his apartment and smashed in his car windows with it. A boyfriend of one of my best girlfriends was relentlessly coming on to me one night and I punched him in the face. This was all before the age of 21.

I grew out of this.

I am still quick to anger, but I don't yell or get physical. I get mean. I have a lot of venom. I tend to hold grudges as well.

I keep working on it. But it is my nature to have a quick and viscious temper, to make enemies easilly, and to enjoy hurting them.

31. It's tripping over the shoelace that sends me into a rage.
And the republican bumperstickers. And drving behind an idiot. And sitting at a traffic light for 2 minutes in fucking Florida, melting from the insane fucking heat and watching the idiot with the Mitt Romney bumbersticker not move fast enough when the light changes.

Other than that, I'm calm as a cucumber. Spinning classes have taken a lot of my anger away.

Oh, and I can't watch Tweety or Lou anymore or I want to kill.

32. I didn't used to but I do now.
It's all come about since the war and all of the other crap that's gone on since. I've lost all hope in people at all to be any part of a solution. I've dropped out of all my activism, cut off contact with all of my friends, and am in the process of cutting off contact with my family. I want to find a job where I don't have to work directly with people anymore. I can't stand the ignorance, some of it purposeful, in the world anymore.

I'm through.

41. Me.
I've been known to scare people. I can go from zero to furiously pissed off in under 3 seconds, and have been known to get physical if angry enough. It's part of my basic makeup, and frankly I don't want to do anything about it despite what other people think. For one thing, I come off much better in confrontations with rudebys and bullies than my more timid friends. And it saved me from getting raped once (but that's a story for another time...)

The funny thing is that if I just get to explode for a few minutes, afterwards I feel much better and I don't hold grudges. Even if the target of my wrath doesn't apologize or mend their ways, I still feel better about them if I just get to unload on them for a little while. If I am forced by social norms to hold it inside and try to get along, I stay mad for months or years and then sometimes can't ever get over it. The first way is much healthier for me AND them.
