Some newer DVDs check to see that the player is set to the region that the disc is made for, in these cases you'd need to set it for whatever region the box says, but for most cases region free will probably work.
Depends on if your player is going to go the extra mile and do the PAL conversion for you. Some hacked players (ie APEX) actually do do the PAL conversion. . . I'm sure there's plenty of others that don't. If you have a PAL disc, just try it. . . you'll be able to tell if it works or not. ;-)
If it doesn't work you'll need a Video Converter. . . first one I could find right now is the EMERSON EVC1575 UNIVERSAL VIDEO CONVERTER. . . that'll plug inbetween the TV & DVD player and convert it.
