Getting the "Big V" tomorrow - any advice from male DU'ers who've been there?
Yes, I am talking the snip procedure; the permanent birth control method for guys; no more worrying about embarrassing trips to the drugstore. Seems like a fairly simple procedure and I'm not particularly apprehensive but I was wondering if any other guys who've had it done have any insight to offer?

I know about using frozen peas/corn to relieve swelling
I know about not going horseback riding or engaging in triathalons, etc. for a while
I know that further tests to ensure that the process has worked must be done before I can be declared sterile (I imagine they send me into a private room with a Dixie cup and the latest Victoria's Secret catalogue to analyze the, uh, output?)

However, any input would be great. Thanks as always!

3. Did it a long time ago
frozen veggies are more comfortable than ice bags.
I had it done on a Friday and was back in my cabinetshop working on Monday.
The first few times we had sex I had a slight pain in my scrotum, not enough to put me off the moment. Otherwise it went well.
I lived close enough to the doc that I took care of the sample at home and brought it in right away. Felt kind of weird handing it over to the receptionist.
I don't regret it for a minute.

Good luck

7. Uh . . . yeah, that whole "spleen" thing didn't happen with me.
Frankly, it was as easy as getting a filling at the dentist. The worst part about the whole thing was the beginning (and there's no multiple needles. What quack operated on him?).

And it's also easier and far less expensive than the woman getting a tubal ligation.

Not to mention they now have scalpel-less vasectomies. Sure wish I read THAT brochure.

It was also back in 2002, so maybe they've made improvements in the techniques since then.

10. From my experience . . .
most people who had it done years or decades ago usually have some aspect of pain or aches in their story, and those who've had it done recently don't report such horror stories.

Seriously, I was going up and down steps like, 4 hours after the surgery. There was no "feels like getting kicked by a mule" at all.

Local anesthetic. I had the nurse hold a mirror so I could watch. Minor pain for two or three days. busted a nut after three days. Whacked into a jar after six weeks and all good to go. the babymaker is now a playtoy.

The guy shaved my bits faster than I do my face! I was pretty freaked out by that, but then he shaved fast, so he was done before I got to total panic.

Other than that, it went fine. Good luck to you!

Unlawful Birth Control Methods

14. Therefore We base Our words on the first principles of a human and Christian doctrine of marriage when We are obliged once more to declare that the direct interruption of the generative process already begun and, above all, all direct abortion, even for therapeutic reasons, are to be absolutely excluded as lawful means of regulating the number of children. (14) Equally to be condemned, as the magisterium of the Church has affirmed on many occasions, is direct sterilization, whether of the man or of the woman, whether permanent or temporary. (15)

Similarly excluded is any action which either before, at the moment of, or after sexual intercourse, is specifically intended to prevent procreation—whether as an end or as a means. (16)

Neither is it valid to argue, as a justification for sexual intercourse which is deliberately contraceptive, that a lesser evil is to be preferred to a greater one, or that such intercourse would merge with procreative acts of past and future to form a single entity, and so be qualified by exactly the same moral goodness as these. Though it is true that sometimes it is lawful to tolerate a lesser moral evil in order to avoid a greater evil or in order to promote a greater good," it is never lawful, even for the gravest reasons, to do evil that good may come of it (18)—in other words, to intend directly something which of its very nature contradicts the moral order, and which must therefore be judged unworthy of man, even though the intention is to protect or promote the welfare of an individual, of a family or of society in general. Consequently, it is a serious error to think that a whole married life of otherwise normal relations can justify sexual intercourse which is deliberately contraceptive and so intrinsically wrong.

18. Good for you
I always respect people who live by their beliefs.

Me, I'm not Catholic; I already have three kids, and the Pope's not going to pay me to support potential baby #4, #5, #6, etc. so I will adhere to my own belief that a surgical procedure to prevent the conception of further offspring is the most reasonable, responsible and fitting direction for me to take.

In the meantime, I'll just stick with trying to raise and pay for the one and only I have.

this won't eliminate those trips to the drug store....

But I'm glad you're taking control of this for yourself. I know too many men who think it's not up to them at all, but instead, the responsibility of their female companion.

But overall, not a terrible experience and well worth the momentary discomfort. Word up: keep something frozen handy, and if small children are prone to run and jump in your lap, knees-first, as you are recovering in your easy chair, BEWARE (yes, I say this from personal experience).

I want to get one, and have been mulling it over (ie: building up the courage) for about a year now. I know it's no big deal anymore, but it's still something that makes me slightly nervous and I don't want it to interrupt my... uh... prostate health regimen or anything. You have to wait a couple of days, right?

31. I know you posted this yesterday, but...
Here's what my husband experienced five years ago. It was quite easy and uncomplicated. He followed pre-surgery instructions (shaved himself, no food that morning, etc.) and I took him to the urologist's office at about 9 am. The procedure was done there and took about 45 minutes from admit and prep to being checked out with prescriptions in hand. I got his scripts and we went home to follow post-op instructions.

While my husband was funny on pain killers (doc gave him scripts for 800 mg Motrin and a few pills of oxycodone), his post-op experience was uncomplicated. Some pain and tenderness for two days but he didn't need sutures for the incisions, just butterfly tapes to keep them closed for three days. And yes, the frozen peas worked better than an ice pack since the peas could conform around his groin. He healed beautifully, as in you couldn't even see the incision scars within about 6 months.

As for the post-op exams, hubby was given two sample cups and told to provide semen samples to the urologist for analysis at about two weeks out and about six weeks out. He was allowed to erm, produce the samples at home and just drop off the sample cups to the docs office as soon as he could. The very first sample was clear and the second was as well. The procedure worked beautifully and our son remains a happy only child!

Oh, and the procedure and follow up exams were covered at 100% by our insurance coverage, so it was also free permanent birth control...

33. UPDATE: It is done
Thanks to all who contributed to this thread. Had it done yesterday afternoon; no pain to speak of (other than 2 insignificant Novacaine shots) beforehand; only mild throbbing afterwards. Worst part was the tugging sensation while I was being stitched - that was the only time I was tempted to ask "Are you done yet?" or "Any ETA on progress?" but I kept mum. I had to; the urologist used a familiar technique of "I'm going to distract you from what's going on by chatting constantly about movies, books, etc. to keep your mind elsewhere." The result is 2 tiny incisions that barely seem remarkable and which have scabbed over nicely. Knowing I'll never have to deal with prophylactics again is a great relief (yes my wife and I are monogamous and intend to be for life of course)

I did try the frozen peas for a couple of hours after I got home then stopped. I can't stand frozen items against my skin for too long. Took the Tylenol codeine the doctor prescribed - big mistake. Codeine has funny results with me and in this case it led to stomach cramps and 11 hours of sleep (this last not such a bad thing).

One funny thing: the doctor warned me I'm still fertile for a bit until everything clears out, and I should have a follow-up exam done after 20 ejaculations to make sure production has been shut down so tp speak. The follow-up visit was scheduled in 3 months, to which I wanted to say "Doc, I'll probably get in 20 ejaculations long before 3 months is up... the Victoria's Secret Valentine's Day issue is due for release soon, and that alone might get me to the target number in a couple of days!"

I figure I'll just call to reschedule my follow-up visit a bit earlier. :)
