Building Healthy Bones: The optimal exercise program?
Edited on Fri Jan-04-08 09:50 PM by Mike03
If a person wants to build strong bones that will last, is it more important to:

Lift weights every day?

Take Calcium as a supplement?

Derive Calcium directly from foods, like dairy products?

And, also, what are the dangers of lifting weights every day if you don't feel any negative effects from doing so? Is it still bad to do so?

1. Ideally, you should have adequate calcium and vitamin D, AND lift weights.
It is not necessary to lift weights every day.

If you WANT to lift weights every day, you should vary the muscle groups you work (for example, chest and back one day, legs the next, shoulders, biceps and triceps the next, and so forth). This allows the muscle groups you work to rest for a day or two in between rounds.

2. Diet and exercise are both very important.
Stronger bones can be achieved via both weight training and diet. Lifting weights has been proven to build bone strength, especially in women. Calcium is important, but not from dairy (this is completely professional advice, nothing to do with my personal beliefs). A good supplement or enrichment from food is the best way to go.

Milk, etc...not so much.

The only dangers from lifting weights every day are overtraining and injury. Work out smart, that's all.
