23. I was just a face in the crowd at of his speeches in the late 80s
But he pointed at me and said: You in the blue shirt, are you gay?

I was stunned and mumbled a response. Then he told a joke about Deliverance, and how if I was gay and if I saw Burt Reynolds, Jon Voight, and Ned Beatty, in the woods . . . which one would I pick to rape.

42. Well, I had intimate details of their records
Since that is the department I worked in. Also I answered phones often, dealing with family members looking for information on court dates/release dates/bail info and the like. The only direct contact with inmates I had, were the ones working in the office (cleaning out garbage cans etc.) They were inmates in minimum security. They weren't supposed to talk to us, but inevitably over time we got to "know" them somewhat.

I did go on tours through some of the other prisons (high security, the women's prison, medium security etc.) I was also covered under the Correctional Officers Union and they put me through school for a degree in Corrections. I was a couple credits shy of actually graduating before I quit and moved away (a regret). I took some really interesting classes though. I still have nightmares of crime scene photos I had to look at. :scared:

50. They are just people.
People who may have made some bad decisions in their lives, or who were unfortunate to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. People suffering from addictions who would otherwise not have done the things they were arrested for. Of course, there are those who were just evil. But I think they were more the minority overall.

 For you and your family member.

29. I went out to get the mail one day, and heard screaming from across the street
(a house with one apartment up and one down). I ran over, and the woman was on the upstairs deck shrieking that the kitchen was on fire.

Mrs R had come out, so I asked her to grab the fire extinguisher from our kitchen for me. I ran into the front entrance of the house and up the stairs, then hit something I hadn't thought of (not being a fireman): There was a layer of SOLID BLACK smoke down to about our feet off the floor, so when I couldn't see a damn thing standing up.

Duh.

I crawled into the kitchen and saw that the fire was on the stove, so I blew it out with my fire extinguisher and went out the back door to breathe.

Then I looked back in, and the son of a bitch was burning again!

Turns out the fire was because she had left some Tupperware on the (electric) stove with the burner turned on.

Double duh.

Went back in and shut the stupid burner off and threw the Tupperware into the sink.

No heroism there, by the way. If I had gone upstairs and seen a wall of flame roaring out of the kitchen, I'd have gotten the fuck outa there, believe me.

But I did feel good later when the Fire Marshal told me that the fire was probably within two or three minutes of getting into the walls when I put it out. And the house (wood frame, and old) would have been gone.

Like I said, zero heroism. But sometimes you gotta go in without thinking; I didn't see the other people who lived there, so then may have been inside and full of smoke so they couldn't get out.

60. I have demonstrated unbelieveable mental and physical...
endurance under long, incredibly stressful periods of sleep deprivation (ie: more than 50 hours) on several occasions in a classified working environment.

So much so that the lactic acid built up in my muscles so bad that I could not walk at the end of these stints, and had to be literally carried to my car, and then I managed to drive myself home.

This is what has made me a little "different" today. And I'm dead serious.

121. My dear LostinVA!
Nah, I didn't drive it into a tunnel...

We (my parents and my brother and I) had gone down to the train yard to watch the trains. My dad is a huge train buff!

An engineer in this particular engine asked my brother if he would like to move the train around a bit of track, and at first my bro said yes.

So we piled into the cab, and then my bro decided he didn't want to drive it after all, so they asked me!

Luckily I didn't have to steer...

Controlling the throttle was something else, and the train would go veryvery fast, and then veryvery slow!

It was a riot, and my sole claim to fame!

Oh, and I moved it maybe 100 feet...

That's the story...

69. I've only met one person who shares my first name.
And it was rather easy to tell us apart because we were a grade or two apart in high school and I was an average sized white guy with long hair, and he was a tall, skinny black guy with a shaved head. :P

There are a few famous people who share my first name though. It's just not a very common name in the US, I suppose. A lot more common in the UK.

85. I lived with a dead man for several days without knowing it.
He rented 1/2 my house and we didn't talk much. My explanation for people who think I am filthy for living with that stench is, it really was BAD) was I always had the front and back windows open so the air moved through. Then I thought it was one of my dogs or something rotten in a garbage pail or somewhere and I kept checking for various causes of the smell. Then I thought their was a dead squirrel or other animal in the wall.

I finally went over to his side of the house and he was dead as dead can be and rotting.

Then I was the only suspect in what was a potential murder case until they ruled he died from natural causes. They put crime scene tape around the house which really made me feel comfortable, (not).

I collected about $2,6000 from my insurance company for "dead person" and it went to disinfecting and ripping out all the carpets and putting in tile in case someone dies again.

The interesting thing is that I was one month premature. My poor mom was bed ridden for months, had to take dangerous blood products (they were not known to be dangerous in '85), and almost miscarried 2 months into the pregnancy (which would have been her second miscarriage in a row).

edit: my mom didn't have a c section

Father of the Constitution, Father of the Bill of Rights, author of a good third of the Federalist Papers, Secretary of State at the time of the Louisiana Purchase, two-term President of the United States, Dolley's husband... so here's hoping! You wouldn't be a direct descendant, though.

120. Oh! I remember something interesting now.
I was on "Jeopardy!" once. And unlike our great IntraVenousDeMilo, I am a loser! :hide: I came in second place in the only game I played. Got beaten out of sight at Final Jeopardy. Here's me with Alex Trebek:

Also, I once saved the live of a guy who was having convulsions in the parking lot of the bank where I worked. Some woman ran into the office screaming that a guy was bleeding and having a seizure in the parking lot. I ran out to help him. The bleeding was from where he smashed his face against a car as he fell. He was turning purple from hypoxia. I got a hold of him, turned his head to the side, and kept his airway clear. I got his blood all over me. There was a girl from the office who didn't like me very much, and she was standing watching what was happening. I yelled at her to call 9-1-1 and get some wet paper towels. I needed to clean the blood and snot away from his face so I could perform mouth-to-mouth if his airway blocked again. I had to wonder what she thought of me after that, covered with blood and yelling at her. All the time I was trying to remember my basic medical training from the Army. He was drifting in and out of consciousness, and I tried to keep him comfortable. I loosened his clothing and took off his shoes. Somebody brought a blanket from somewhere and I covered him with it. A few minutes later, the EMTs arrived. After I gave my statement, I washed the blood off and went somewhere quiet for a while.

Louis played 'Frank' in the floor show (and had the most fishnet-gorgeous legs i've ever seen on a man), and Wendy was our resident 'Magenta'. After i had been going for a month or so, i was recruited to be the new 'Riff Raff' (the previous Riff had graduated college and moved back to wherever). A couple of years later, the two of them were looking for a third roommate to share their downtown apartment, so i moved in.

I still talk to Wendy on occasion...
i have no idea where Louis is now... last i heard was the Seattle area.

I was also invited to appear on The Carlos Herrera Program, which at the time was Spain's version of Leno. I got to meet Pedro Almodovar that night (he was also on the show as a guest). It was pretty cool, but just enough notoriety to know that I have absolutely no desire what-so-ever to be famous.
