alas, it's the last real night of vacation
I'm back to work on Monday, when the spring semester starts

At some point on Saturday night of a typical weekend, the realization hits that, sadly, the weekend will come to an end and the work week will resume. At the end of a long and enjoyable holiday break, the feeling is compounded.
Alas, it's been a good break, and I knew it would come to an end eventually :toast:

1. I was off for almost 3 weeks during the holidays.
I felt the same way.

2. Fishwax!!!!! I was gonna PM you!!!!
We sent my parents a fondue service for Christmas, but my mom doesn't know what kind of burning gas works with it to heat the fondue. Here, it's called brennsprit in German; isn't that the same as denatured alcohol? What do you guys use when you make fondue???

(Nice to see you! :hi: )

4. hey! I was wondering how that gift went
:)

The common brand here is Sterno--I'm pretty sure it's the same/similar as brennspirit

:hi:

6. Is Sterno a liquid????
I found this website ( http://www.lightweightcampers.org.uk/technical/fuelnames/index.html ) which indicates that brennsprit is denatured alcohol (which I think is methyl alcohol). Gawd, I can't let my mom buy the wrong stuff. They just bought a new house. :scared:

8. it's gelatinous
On the can it says "cooking fuel" and says it contains methyl alcohol. At any rate, it looks like pink jelly, and I've yet to burn our apartment down :) Just pop the lid off and hold a match to it, and it burns like a candle.

11. yep
we melt it over the stove and then transfer it to the fondue pot heated by the sterno (well, the fondue pot is over a water pot, like in a double boiler, iirc--just for the sake of accuracy). I hope they enjoy it :)

Happy New Year to you as well :toast:

13. Ah, okay. I understand now.

We heat our fondue cheese(s) on the stove in the ceramic caquelon (fondue pot) and then when the cheese melty-ness/texture are right, we put the caquelon on the stand over the chasseur filled with brennsprit. :hi:

that looks a bit more durable than our setup :)

Oh, man, 1:30 in the morning is no time to be craving fondue, but ...

3. same here
pretty lame. At the same time, I have some anxiety about being away from home for this long (I'm at my gf's for the holiday), and not doing my work. Still, I'd rather hang out with my lady, watch loads of old Doctor Who on youtube and take the dog for walks than be back home, which is boring.

12. alas, that's how breaks usually go
Edited on Sun Jan-13-08 02:30 AM by fishwax
for me, anyway -- I always have big plans for doing exciting things, but I wind up too burnt out from finishing the semester to do most of it :)

I had a really good break this time around--got to visit a lot of family in various locations. Guess I'm ready to get back to the routine, though :)

Good luck this spring! :toast:
