If you've seen some of Daniel Day-Lewis' acting in previous movies, you'll know that he is a master character actor. He does not disappoint in this dark and complex character. The story takes place in the early 20th century and is based on Upton Sinclair's novel "Oil." Lewis plays Daniel Plainview, a ruthless oil man eager to cash in on the early parts of the Texas Oil Boom.
This movie is a dark tale, and Lewis leaves no stone unturned in portraying a cunning, articulate, and ultimately heartless character. Plainview is the one man you wouldn't want to cross. In fact, you wouldn't want to have the misfortune of having to do business with him. He systematically finds and devours an entire town and no one is safe. No, he doesn't do a lot of killing. In fact, there isn't a great deal of overt violence in the film. Lets just say that Lewis makes this characters words far harsher than a knife in the belly. The blood in this movie is the oil, the blood of the earth. He is a man who trusts no one, will lie to anyone, and who only has one real goal. Money.
The cinematography and musical score are glorious. Particularly the music, recorded in London by Radiohead's lead guitarist.
No spoilers here, highly recommended.
