Cloverfield
Nobody on here talking about this at all? I'm surprised since I thought there were a lot of sci fi geek types on here. I'm not one at all and I'm really excited to see this. I just hope it's not too much of a typical Godzilla type monster movie or all the mystery and hype will be quickly deflated.

1. I saw the commercial/trailer
Looks pretty cool, but I'm usually disappointed in the movies themselves. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

2. Smokey Takes Manhattan!
I just started hearing about Cloverfield a few weeks ago, but apparently there has been buzz in some fandom circles for months. I'm kind of surprised, because Mrs. Bluedog is active in "Lost" fan circles, so she usually hears everything there is to hear about JJ Abrahams well ahead of time.

I noticed that the writer, Drew Goddard, has worked with JJ on Lost, and penned some of the best episodes. That's a good sign.

Part of me hopes that this is "Smokey Takes Manhattan"...

3. Just a rehash of the Godzilla movies
done from a "Blair Witch Project" perspective. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of the cast with their face up to the cell phone camera with a flashlight lighting his/her face from underneath the chin trembling as he/she says "I'm so scared!!!"

7. There've been about a half dozen threads here in the past month
and a couple in the Sci-Fi group.

I'm kinda ambivalent about seeing this. I figure it'll either be a smash, or Day After Tomorrow meets Blair Witch. Half of me wants to wait for the first weekend 'word of mouth' reviews; the other half doesn't want 'the monster' spoiled before I get to see it.

It's interesting, but there's been so much on-line hype about "the monster" and almost nothing offline. Everyone connected with the film is keeping very tight-lipped about it; of course, they're all under Non-disclosure agreements. All we know for sure, aside from a few screen captures of the monster from the trailers, is that Abrams has said he wanted to make a movie in the Godzilla tradition that would give the US its own "monster".

Bush wasn't enough?

19. that's what happened with Blair Witch for me
I got worked up over the movie and then "meh"

and, it wasn't the jittery camera that made it seem like real "found" film.

I just wasn't even mildly scared.

14. I'm actually kinda excited about it...
...but I'm trying to keep my expectations in check. A lot of people keep invoking Blair Witch Project but I don't think that Cloverfield will be quite as much of a letdown as that movie was; at least one massive explosion and the head of the Statue of Liberty rolling down a Manhattan street is a lot more than Blair Witch ever bothered to show. But I'm still bracing myself for a lot of shaky camera work.

If you haven't seen it already (I just saw it for the first time yesterday) check out this video clip that was part of the movie's viral marketing campaign. It's kinda creepy.

Jeez, based on the other jaded, too cool for school responses I'm really surprised.

I'm just thankful I didn't get one of the "How can you watch movies about such death and destruction when there's so much real life death and destruction." responses.

18. I just noticed the poster...
...for the movie about a month ago in the men's room of a local bar that I go to. I really didn't pay that much attention at first. I just thought to myself, "Oh, another disaster movie", but the title of the movie made me kind of curious. Cloverfield? I look it up and end up seeing one of the trailers. I've been looking forward to it ever since. Did you watch the video clip?

There are a few reviews up at www.aint-it-cool-news.com that are absolutely raving about it. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but from the sound of it, it's really good.

People who are overly antagonized by hype are almost as annoying as people who fall for the hype, IMO.

26. Don't know about the monster, but the movie got named that...
Edited on Wed Jan-16-08 10:09 PM by mcscajun
...kinda by default, kinda by accident.

Movies generally have working titles, and sometimes truly obscure ones that are never intended to be used, but are meant to throw overeager fanboys/fangirls/reporters off the scent during production.

Cloverfield was one of those, and it just stuck. No particular reason, although there is much conjecture around it on the IMDb board for the film. Something about moss...

PS: The title "Cloverfield", initially just a codename for the movie, is named for the boulevard in Santa Monica where the Bad Robot offices were located during the making of the film.

27. Saw it....didn't like it...
I'm not particularly a monster movie fan and The Host kind of solidified that. But Cloverfield looks to be more than that because it's a found video type movie and I'm a sucker for those and think this will add a human element beyond the special effects.

If it turns out to be just a monster movie along the lines of The Hose then I won't like it. There's always that possibility, but from what I've read that's not the case.

I review movies in Portland, Oregon as part of the press. As you may know, movie studios preview their work for us in advance of opening for the general public.

"Cloverfield" had a preview screening this week on Tuesday, I believe. I chose not to go to the screening. I had to go to the dentist on Monday and wasn't fit for human consumption on Tuesday! That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Cordially,

Radio Lady Ellen

35. not at all..
you really never learn where the monster came from, nor do you get many good shots of it. Not much character development either. I will admit that the CG of Manhattan in total ruin was cool; very well done, but it is difficult to absorb much detail due to the emulated handheld format. This may not be an enjoyable experience if you're prone to motion sickness.
