Favorite movies that do not have a happy ending
I think on of my favorite 'Unhappily Ever After' movies is Map of the Human Heart. I bawl like a baby everytime I see that movie!

1. Chinatown...
...and believe it or not, the original screenplay by Robert Towne actually *had* a "happy" ending--Jake and Evelyn driving down to Mexico together... Polanski, thank God, knew better, and knew how the story had to end...

26. Wake up and realize those zombies
are relatives.

(Original NOTLD made in my hometown. Cemetery in the opening of the movie is where a lot of family is buried, and many, many cousins earned $5 each being zombies.)

5. Brazil - the original ending ...
I've seen both endings and the unhappy one is much better (and it makes sense in regards to the what happened in the final part of the movie).

8. Another vote for Brazil
As far as I'm concerned, there is only one ending, though there are two versions (original edit and 'final'); the "love conquers all" just doesnt exist even though I've seen it!

Yep, pretty sad, even though he is stuck in his own happy fantasy, at least the real ending shows us the real world outside of him.

36. It depends on whether (WARNING: Spoiler!)
You think Vidal's getting it more than makes up for Ofelia's getting it. I don't know. (I do know I said "Thank you!" when Vidal got it. But that didn't make me feel good in retrospect.)

Regardless, that slice-through-the-cheek was a nice bit of come-uppance.

As was the gotcha line right before they shot him. Bravo!

20. Ellyn Burstyn was robbed of an Oscar that year
and Jennifer Connelly should have been nominated - she was way better in that role than she was in "A Beautiful Mind"

But come on Julia Roberts over Ellyn - I don't think so! Burstyn had one of the most disturbing and very unglamerous roles. And when she was sucking face with Christopher Macdonald - you really believed this woman was truly off her rocker.

And I loved how Requiem showed all aspects of addiction including the whole food & weight loss side

32. "After Hours" The original ending. Not the stupid Cheech & Chong one
The guy was supposed to die in the plaster cast, but the studios would let the movie be released with that ending. Hence the stupid one that was tacked on.

I called it an unhappy ending. But it is ambiguous, which makes it one of the richer films in memory.

47. The Empire Strikes Back
Han's frozen in carbonite, Luke's hand is cut off-but we know there will be a third movie in which everything is resolved.

I just love the scene where the bad guys are lowering Han Solo into the carbon freezing chamber-Leia says "I love you" and he says "I know". It's so tough and funny.

49. Transformers The Movie
It didn't have an unhappy ending per se but, although the Autobots destroyed Unicron and reclaimed Cybertron, it doesn't really make up (at least not to me) for Optimus Prime and a lot of other beloved characters dying (earlier) in the film. Maybe it would be better to characterize it as a "bittersweet" ending.

54. In a sense, Schindler's List.
Although he and the supporting cast are alive at the end of the film with a new beginning on the horizon, the film's ending is a serious downer as Schindler laments on how many more he could have saved. I weep at the ending every time-- and they're certainly not tears of joy...
