Recommend a video camera for me

I will soon need a video camera. What will I use it for? Sometimes for taking pictures of my kid and sometimes to films scenes of accidents both inside and out.

HD camera? What are the price ranges? I want something with pretty long battery life, it does not need to be the smallest.

What about editing software? Does it come with the camera? Is there good open-source stuff out there?

Any recommendations?

1. All I can suggest is to stay away from the MiniDV tapes....

I had one that used those, and it ate tapes on a regular basis. Maybe some are better than others, but if I had it to do over again, I would have spent the extra money on a Mini-DVD or a HD-based unit.
