So I went and got my mammogram...
and the technician who worked there thought it would be nice to tell me how she sees women in their 50's, and if they haven't had kids, their boobs are perfect.

:wtf:

I was speechless.

This rivals the Planned Parenthood lady who told me years and years ago that "God put that hair there for a reason!"

but I haven't had kids, and I have that whole "pre-50's" drooping thing going.

They're healthy. That's all I care about.

It's bad enough that we have to get our boobs wrenched around and squished between two mercilessly hard and cold glass plates--do they have to wound our prides at the same time! x(

18. I hear conflicting stories
In some, it's a certainty that having kids makes boobies droop (and causes other fun changes to our bodies); other studies swear that's not the case, and old age is the only thing that accounts for it.

I say it's hormones--when my thyroid went wacko, long before I had a child, my boobs drooped.

Your visit to the boobie-squish place reminded me of a visit I made a few years ago--the technician commented, "Hm. Your right breast is smaller than your left one." Yeah, I KNOW, Sherlock--they belong to me. Any other flaw you feel like pointing out while I'm standing here half naked while you shove my boob around like a sack of Play-Doh? I must have looked irked, because then she said, "That's very common, you know." THEN WHY POINT IT OUT?

Guess what--I changed mammogram places. Go figure.

22. Wouldn't you think women who yank boobies around for a living
would be more tactful? I know they want to make small talk, but come ON!

I am so glad I switched--the place every OB/GYN sends women to around here is this horrific cattle-call (and I mean that literally--get out your udders, girls) of a place. It is HUGE; when you walk through the door, you're turned to the left or the right--it's split down the middle and identical on either side, one staff for each side. You go into your little booth and put on your gown, and they give you an afghan. Then they send you to a waiting room with 50 or so other women. And they have TVs and an aquarium and a gas fireplace and magazines and other crap, and free water or tea (IIRC) and jewelry for sale on the counter...and for all this nonsense they tell you to block at least FOUR HOURS of your day for the appointment. No shit. FOUR. And they usually fill all four hours they warned you about.

Guess how long it takes me at my new place? Five minutes.

Yeah, for that, I can live without the aquarium and the gas fireplace...and the tactless technicians, thanks. :eyes:

And really I have no complaints about this place, other than this one person's bizarre commentary on my boobage...last time I went it was fine... and I'm in and out in minutes!

I'll give 'em another chance, probably... like I said, they're reputed to be the best. :)

32. Jeez, what a jerk
Women tend to be insecure about their bodies anyway. They don't need some callous twit making disparaging comments.

I'm an OB/GYN Practitioner, and I always try to be gentle - both physically and verbally. There have been a few body piercings/tattoos that made me bite my tongue to avoid blurting out "What were you thinking!?", and one that made me fake a coughing fit to keep from bursting into laughter (it involved a cartoon of a lawnmower in an interesting location).

All boobs are perfect if they're healthy.

44. Ok
The doctors at our hospital use the term fibrous breast tissue. Younger women have more dense or fibrous breasts that is why mammograms are difficult to do on younger females. I can't believe I posted in a boob thread. I am glad you are ok-

45. Dense breasts is a medical term...and it's good that you know about it.
IIRC, "dense" breasts contain more fibrous tissue than other breasts. It doesn't affect their appearance, but women with dense breasts are slightly more at risk of contracting breast cancer. so they need to pay closer attention to things like self-checking, mammograms, etc.

The techie should have explained that to you.

with my doc when he says it's time (my GP is male and my GYN is female, wouldn't have a male GYN again for anything!) I always tell him that I'll go when they start using a similar method to detect prostate and testicular cancer. I always end up going anyway. I get my bone density scan the same day. Why can't all tests be as easy as that one?

If they can't figure out the difference between providing medical care, and rating women's breasts in a sexual way, they need some counseling from their supervisor or a different job.

"Perfect" breasts in that environment ought to mean no sign of illness.
