Went to saturday evening mass...
The priest talked about characterization. He said there are three reasons why people characterize other people:
1. They are ignorant, 2. They are malicious, and/or 3. For self-serving purposes.

The priest described Wasps and how they are often mis-characterized as scary. Then, he said something that I learned the hard way is simply not true. He said if a person simply stands still, if a wasp is flying around him/her, and doesn't move or bother the wasp, the wasp won't sting. I learned pretty young that is a myth. When I was about 14 years old, I stood perfectly still while a Yellow Jacket - which I had already left alone - landed on my upper arm and stung me. Yep. I'll never forget watching that stinger go into my arm... the shock and pain of it. And when I told my husband, on the way home, my own story, he said, "You must have done something to disturb that wasp." I didn't. Well, I guess, since I was alone, it will always be my word against a common belief.

I'm rambling tonight. Sorry. I just thought it was an interesting mass. And, ironic, that now there is a whole new group of people who were being taught the lesson of how *not* to get stung by a wasp-- that failed me many years ago.

Did this thread have a point? I don't know! lol

1. He was talking about wasps; you experienced a yellow jacket.
Thus the dilemma of religion.

2. Well, I thought wasps was a general term..
Since I've heard people also say to stand perfectly still if Bees swarm around, also.

I am sorry you were stung, sweetie...

I know damn well you did nothing to deserve it, either!

11. Well, a Catholic might think she deserved it, whereas a Unitarian would say precisely what you said.

13. Not that it really matters...
...I am not Catholic. I just attend mass to try to keep peace in the family. To new brides, I have this advice: Be very careful what promises you make when you are first married!

20. Me, too
Though over the years I've met some pretty good priests. I was their favorite Protestant, they even let me teach PSR and hubby and I taught Pre-Cana classes.

14. Well now....that's pretty interesting!
Seeing as how I was raised a Catholic...

And got married in the Unitarian Church!

Thank you for clarifying...

15. What a coincidence
I am a mass on Saturday night.

When I sit around the house, I sit - around - the house.

19. It's all part of my master plan
In a few months I start fishing again and they will have a hard time keeping me in the office for any reasonable length of time.

Good to see you again. :hi:

21. Thanks
Good to see you, too. :hi:

Fishing is nice... and relaxing (sometimes!). My grandfather had the best fishing story. Here it goes...
He told me he was discharged from the U.S. Army for bleeding ulcers. The doctor told him (my grandfather) that he only had 6 months to live. Well, according to my grandfather, he decided to just take two six-packs of beer and go fishing. Guess what? He lived another 45 years! lol Well... it was funny when he used to tell the story.
