17. Stumbled on that yesterday
Between my wife and myself we finished it, but the tortured language (obviously written by someone for whom English is a second language) did make it hard in spots. The bookworm puzzle had us doing a forehead slap once we realized what we had done wrong, a real "duh" moment there. The one where certain 4 digit numbers equaled some one digit number seemed kind of random. Not really a puzzle, just a random but decipherable code.

19. I'm stuck on the bookworm puzzle.
I even drew I diagram, and I can't see how it's _not_ the answer I came up with. Highlight below to see my answer.

| 0.25" | 2" |0.25" | 0.25" | 2" | 0.25" | 0.25" | 2" | 0.25" |

There are seven inches between the inside front cover of volume one to the inside back cover of volume 3, which would mean the bookworm traveled 7 inches, unless I'm missing something very obvious.

21. Think of the way books stack on a shelf.
Edited on Sun Jan-20-08 05:22 PM by Kutjara
With the spines of the books facing toward you, volume one is on the left, volume 2 in the middle, and volume three on the right. Now think about where page one of volume one is. How about the final page of volume 3? Without giving away the answer, that's the key to the puzzle. To put it another way, if the books were written in Japanese, your answer would be correct.

I don't know what answer you are coming up with, but the correct answer ends in ".0" which, being the good engineer that I am, I included since all the measurements offered included at least one decimal place.

24. There should be a little box at the bottom of each question...
...for you to type your answer. You might need to update your version of Flash Player if you can't see it.

For question two, think of each letter as the initial of a word. The words together form a sequence. <spoiler below>

The sequence is the numbers from one to nine, spelled in words.

What is this, a test of Engrish?

I'm stumped. I've even gone back and "cheated" by putting every month of the calendar year into the box, and it tells me all of them are wrong. If the name isn't a calendar month, how could I possibly be expected to guess what it might be????

On Edit: Never mind.... It helps to read the question carefully before attempting to answer it.

Then see how row 2 relates to its sum
how row 3 relates to its sum
etc.

81. I looked at it like this...
When a page says something like

37 pages are lying

All the pages before it are wrong ("lying") since their number of "lying" pages is less than 37.

When you get to 1000, either page 1000 is correct, or it's lying.

It can't be correct, for then the page itself would be lying (since there are 1000 pages). And it can't be both correct *and* lying.

So it's lying, and it's *not* true that 1000 pages are lying.

If page 999 is correct about all the other pages, then it fits. (pp 1-998, plus p. 1000)

:nuke: <-- my head now

You know it's under 30, because he only has to go 30 and he goes AT LEAST one inch each day. Now all you have to figure out is however many days, plus one day where he goes 3 inches. :)

I can't fucking do math, and it seems to me there are a LOT of possible answers here, not least of which because it's not clear whether they mean "How many fish did each brother catch at first?" or "How many did they collectively catch at first?"

111. Here's one way to think about the fish
Each time a brother takes his share, there is an even third to take out, plus one. So each time it has to be something like

10 fish (removes 1, takes his share of 3 fish)
... (which leaves 6)

13 fish (removes 1, takes his share of 4 fish)
... (which leaves 8)

16 fish (removes 1, takes his share of 5 fish)
... (which leaves 10)

13 doesn't work, since we're left with 8. But 16 works (leaves us with 10). So what gets us to 16?

115. Fish answer here.....(spoiler alert)
25

First brother chucks one fish out, divides the remaining pile of 24 into thirds and takes his share (8 fish), leaving 16 fish.
Second brother chucks one fish out, divides the remaining pile of 15 into thirds and takes his share (5 fish), leaving 10 fish.
Third brother chucks one fish out, divides the remaining pile of 9 pile into thirds and takes his share (3 fish) leaving 6 fish.

You have to make the fairly absurd assumption that each brother recombines the fish into one pile after taking his share. Otherwise, the other brothers would presumably suspect some sharing had already taken place.

127. Ok I plugged in yer answer for #25...it did not work...
...nor does it make sense. I spent hours and hours calculating it and I kept getting answers of 8040 and 8163 and 8120 and etc. I could not get the same answer twice because when calculating, I tended to drift off in my countings: 33, 35, 37, 38, 39, 41, 43, 47 and etc. It was quite frustrating because I really felt I could do this without further help! So crack the code for me...how did you arrive at the answer and is it really what I read in your answer post?

128. Hold on a sec...
Your thread title said level 25, but it sounds like your post was describing the question for level 23. I think you may be getting them backwards.

I double checked my answers above, and the answers that I gave for both levels 23 and 25 are correct.

As far as how I derived my answers...

Level 23: I used Excel and just plotted out the numbers in a triangle pattern as shown in the question. It was much easier than doing it manually, as you can use a lot of "+2" formulas to fill in the numbers quicker. Then on the 20th row, I just used a "SUM" function to add the numbers on that row.

Level 25: The key here was the wording of the question, and honestly, I don't remember now what the question asked exactly. It said something to the effect that the water doubles in size every day and that the city will flood on day 60. The question then asks on what day will the city be half full with water, and with the water doubling in size every day...well...that's how I got my answer.

I hope this helps. :hi:

135. My bad, it was indeed level #23
I had calculated by hand 3 times one night, got three differing answers and used up chances guessing around the number multiple times... this took a couple of hours..., I tried again on the next night and after another hour or so I gave up.

For some reason, after giving up, I had gotten it into my head that I was on the very last puzzle, #25 when I was still back at #23. Hence my frustration when #25's answer did not work for #23's question! Thanks for the aid. I will not add my name to the end list...I was unable to earn that distinction.

My hat is off to those who made it. :toast:
