I bought my son some clothes for interviewing today
2 pair of pants
2 shirts
3 ties
socks

he already had one pair of nice pants, one nice shirt and a couple of ties, and some shoes

he's 10 days away from having his car insurance canceled (he has to give them nearly $900 and he doesn't have it)

there were 7 jobs in the Sunday paper I think he has a pretty good shot at... including two ads for work at the U.S. Post Office

1. I wish him luck
in 2006 I was in a similar position - absolutely needed money. Even though I had a master's degree, not only were there no proper jobs (i.e. using any of my skills), there were almost no jobs to apply for at all. I ended up working for minimum wage for awhile.... because I didn't even get an interview at most places. If your son comes up empty handed, don't think it's his fault - the economy is total shit, and far more people are applying for fewer jobs. We with decent jobs are lucky.

3. my son is trained to do nothing
his only job experience is working at fast food places.

He had a scholarship, but he totally blew it.

He's pretty blue about his life, and getting turned down interview after interview only makes matters worse.

Somewhere along the line he decided to learn every single life lesson the hard way. I hurt for him, but I can't make him listen to me.

5. that's the breaks
I don't really have degrees that translate into job skills. He may be in a better position that someone like myself in some respects. It's hard to explain to people hiring for entry level positions why I have never worked a job for longer than six months in ten years (the reasons being college, grad school, and self employment as a touring musician). It's good that you're helping him. Now I've got a great gig as a post graduate researcher, but I never would have made it this far without my parents' and friends' help. I had to move in with them and work to save money for bits after college and grad school. Shit, I even had to borrow money to help me pay some bills this year for things like getting my apartment set up.

...and I'd like to give you a big  for being such a wonderful Mom. I was in this position about 16 years ago. I was sitting at a bus stop, on my
way home from work (Yep, not even enough money for a car), and I looked across the street at the Downtown Louisville Recruiting Center. I said, which ever door opens first, that's the branch I'm going to join. A car pulled up, this guy in a white uniform got out and walked into the Navy office. The rest, as they say, is history. I wouldn't change a thing about my life, but I sometimes wonder what I would be doing right now had I not made that decision. No regrets though. Not one.
