Calling Vegans & Vegetarians - I have a question about soy milk
Edited on Tue Jan-22-08 10:38 AM by Maine-ah
My BB is allergic to milk, and she's 14 months old. We've been using a soy formula, and are supposed to have switched her to milk at this point, but of course we can't because of her allergy. We've tried Lactaid, and she won't touch the stuff, and I was wondering if soy milk would do? Does it offer the same nutrition? And if so, which ones do you recommend? I do have a call into the pedi, just waiting for them to call back, but I'd like your input too.

Thanks,
Maine-ah :hi:

1. Many brands have calcium and vit. D
I think that's as good as cow's milk. IMO Silk tastes the best.

2. Soy is also a fairly common allergy.

Vitamin enriched rice milk and almond milk are other options, just in case. All are sweeter than cow milk IMO, so she shoulod take to them, and all are obviously healthier. You'll have to read the cartons tho, as nutrition values vary significantly, even between brands of soy milk.

Good luck.

3. she's not allergic to soy
we have had her on a soy formula for quite some time now.

Thanks for the info :hi: I'll be sure to read the backs of the cartons. The pedi said as long as it's low in sugar, has calcium and vit A & D, we can make the switch.

4. Should be fine.
Once you find a brand she digs, it's usually cheaper to buy by the case.

5. Soy milk is very close nutritionally to cow's milk.
I'd get a brand enriched with calcium. Silk is a good, commercially available brand.

Wait to hear from the doc, of course.

6. spoke w/ doc & she rec'd the Silk as well.
Which is cool, that's what's in the fridge at the moment. My mom had brought some by yesterday for BB to try, (vanilla) and she seems to like it fine. A hell of a lot cheaper than formula which the first ingredient on that is corn syrup solids.....ya, that's got to be good for her.

Thanks as well, LM. We're gonna make the switch today!

9. Show me the teats on a soy bean. Then you can call it milk.

I can't get soy "milk" within two inches of my face without gagging.

Smells exactly like rancid baby formula.

And I'm fine with other soy and tofu products, because those are generally tasteless and odorless and take on whatever flavor you are cooking with...but that soy milk?

ugh...bleech.
