For those of you who think this is a good time to joke...
about Heath Ledger's death, here's a hint: it's not.

Give it a break for at least a day.

Look, obviously the issue here is that Heath was an important icon in the gay community because Brokeback Mountain. Why can't you simply respect that? Not all his fans were gay of course, but many of us that were hardest hit by it were. I don't normally cry when I hear a celeb died, and I didn't intend to, or think I would this time. But I did. Apparently I don't have to be a relative of Heath's to somehow feel a deep connection to him.

40. Heath Ledger was proud of that role.
In interviews...you can tell he was proud of being a part of "Brokeback Mountain". And that's what I respected about him...he didn't mention his heterosexuality 90,000 times as some straight actors do when they portray a gay man or in a movie with gay undertones. He just talked about how glad he was to portray Ennis in "Brokeback Mountain". And I respected him so much for that.

I personally find the black humor/jokes distasteful, however I don't think people who make them are making them because they are assholes, necessarily...Some people just deal with emotional situations by inappropriate (to us) humor. I would suggest that those whom make those kinds of jokes, are not as well socially adjusted as others. Its best just to ignore it. As someone else said, while I certainly understand the sentiments..By bringing attention to the behavior you are just encouraging it.

But...
Sure, black humor is some people's refuge. But if another person expresses that that humor is causing them pain, I think that's where the line is. If you know for a fact that you are hurting someone else and keep going with it, that's not a sign of immaturity, that's a sign of being a dick. Just MHO.

70. and I will disagree with you
the people who make inappropriate jokes don't do so because of their internal turmoil. The people joking about Ledger's death just find it meaningless. They didn't like him - they didn't care about him.

And that's fine - he was an actor. Either you liked him, or you didn't, or you didn't give a shit either way.

But the people who are poking those who mourn do so because they think it makes them cooler-than-thou. And that's the very definition of asshole.

77. It's become a family tradition of sorts to share jokes and funny stories after a family member dies.
We're Spanish/Italian but we handle death like the Irish. We either consciously or unconsciously feel the need to lighten the mood. Years ago, when my grandfather died, my cousin and I were at the gathering after the funeral, my cousin was taking it very hard.. harder than I was at least... Then my Uncle Charlie walks up and tells us a couple raunchy jokes neither one of us will probably ever forget. My Aunt Mimi had a good one too.

When my uncle Charlie died... we were all at his house when he passed, it took some of us by surprise... there was allot of grief, and I could feel the pain pouring out of everyone.. less than an hour later his brothers were there telling my cousin and I some funny stories about growing up with our uncle Charlie.

My father was named after my Uncle Charlie, and I was named after my father... and in March/April I'm going to be an uncle myself... the cycle continues.
