They are the little pieces of skin that grow all around a person's fingernails. For some of us, they are masses of red pulsating throbbing infected oozing skin that hangs off our fingers. God, they hurt.
If I don't chew them, they get all frayed and dry out into these pointy painful bits of dried hardened skin and get snagged on everything in sight. Chewing them usually ends up making them sore as hell because I can't seem to ever get the ones hiding in the corners of my nails. I still don't see their purpose.
I suggest a coat of clear nail polish and some Burts Bees Hand Salve. It seems to be working wonders for me. Now all I got to do is keep my fingers out of my mouth.
