Have you ever gotten impatient and yelled responses at an automated answering system?

I admit I did yesterday. I know it was childish and irrational.

Not only that, but it seemed that after I yelled at it once, it wouldn't recognize anything I said, no matter how sweetly I said it. :silly:

1. You know, I have found that a couple of things work..
Yell "Operator" or "I want to speak to a (add any adjective you want) person".

The systems will often recognize those requests and send you to a real person. I have done that in the past and it does work.

5. I thought that was
standard operating procedure. I always tell the machine I want to talk to a live person. Some of those automated systems are programmed to recognize certain requests - and certain voice patterns (anger, frustration, etc). If the machine asks for numeric input (SS#, phone #, acct. #, etc) my keys always seem to get "stuck" with the same number entered repetitively. I usually get a real person fairly quickly. Cuss the machine. Be nice to the human.

6. Oh, yeah....
I hate those voice recognition systems- I'd much rather be prompted to press 1 for english, etc.... For some reason, my voice doesn't seem to work with those things- perhaps it's my southern accent.

7. Whenever you get prompt, just say "agent"
After two or three cycles of trying to get you to play nice with the phone tree, it'll almost always divert you to a real, live human being.

8. Yes, I have
When they come back and say, "I'm sorry, did you say _____?"

and then I repeat the word again, and they say, "I'm sorry, did you say ____?"

I get frustrated.

Normally, if I call up some place where I know there will be at least a few layers of automated messages, I just say "operator"

9. Sure. It's not entirely irrational, if it makes you feel better.
No harm done.

11. Nah, I save the yelling for automated services that CALL me
Pisses me off and no amount of meditation seems to calm me to the point it won't trigger a high decibel response.

15. all the time
try the "Get Human" website. It has all the tricks to get to a real person instead of being stuck in a perpetual loop with the automatic voice thing.

18. A better question is have I ever NOT gotten impatient and yelled?
My feelings about those things go well beyond hate.

Your story, though, reminds me of the time the automatic bottle/can return machine was being temperamental; I was getting so tired of it spitting the cans back out at me saying the store didn't accept that brand (which, they did; I bought them there) that I just started throwing the cans in as hard as I could. A sign immediately began flashing DO NOT THROW CONTAINERS! DO NOT THROW CONTAINERS! I'm surprised a mechanical arm didn't emerge and start wagging its finger at me.

I felt pretty stupid and was glad I didn't have any witnesses....

And the computer voice will reply, "I'm sorry...I didn't get that."
