when it comes to relationships, I have the most negative view of men.

And it's too bad really, because I like men.

I was going to respond, "Someone who'll always be there for them but make minimal demands on them," but I won't.

some women have been lucky to find exceptions. I envy them.

I'm not talking about material things, either, although a minimal level of personal responsibility is desirable. In fact, if he's all focused on his house, his car, and his investments, and thinks that the suburban lifestyle is the crown of human civilization, he gets negative points. When a man with dead eyes can talk only about work and sports and whatever was on mainstream TV last night, I see no point in going out with him more than once.

At my age, I'm not going to have kids, I have a place to live, and even a beat-up old car (which I wish I didn't need). A second income would be nice, but I do all right most of the time.

Being a good lover is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for a relationship.

I'm looking for someone who shares enough of my interests and values to be a good companion but is different enough to be enriching. We should bring out the best in each other.

Anything less isn't worth the trouble. I'm through with putting up with boring, shallow men who never had a thought in their heads that the mass media didn't put there.

There are a lot of shallow people out there who are only interested in acquiring more and more stuff. I have plenty of stuff already, thankewverymuch and probably have too much. I'm not interested in a McMansion in Eden Prairie with a boat in the garage. I want someone I can talk to about anything who actually has an opinion of their own. Someone with heart.

Whether they find that through love or sex or friendship depends on the individual. I don't believe men, even the ones who have treated me with less respect than I would have liked, are a bunch of mindless, impulsive ass-chasers; it just doesn't jive.

It's given me great insights into the perceptions of women.
