Your feelings about the Academy Award Nominations?
Edited on Thu Jan-24-08 06:46 PM by Mike03
Did your favorite film get nominated?

Who that you liked got overlooked?

I didn't see enough movies this year to have a worthwhile opinion on this subject, although I was a bit disappointed that David Fincher's film ZODIAC was so overlooked, and even though I very much like NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN and think that the Coen brothes were as faithful to an author as filmmakers can possibly be, I'm frankly surprised it is considered best picture material. I guess I would also have liked to have seen SWEENEY TODD nominated for a few more awards, especially Helen Bonnam Carter for Best Supporting Actress.

And then, just to raise hell, I would say it would be nice to see Tarantino's DEATH PROOF nominated for something, maybe for being completely oblivious to being relevant.

In terms of 2007 movies, what would you advise me to see? What are some great movies I probably missed?

I'm a huge David Cronenberg fan, and I just ordered "Eastern Promises," which I understand was a good film.

1. Sweeney Todd was robbed
I really wanted Burton to get recognized for his best film in years.
Though it's good Depp finally got nominated for something outside of that Pirates shit. Can't belive of all the amazing work he's done, the academy didn't notice hiom til he did a film for a Disney ride

2. I think Michael Clayton was a HELL of a film and should have been seen by more people...
...while "Atonement," which I haven't seen, SEEMS just like the same old "Let's nominate an accent-y period piece" ticket, just like "Juno," which I have seen, is this years Quirky Indie Comedy That Could (but won't.)

Zodiac SHOULD have been nominated, I agree.

3. I liked Zodiac but movies that are released
earlier in the year tend to be overlooked. The only nominated movie I have seen is "Juno." I liked it. The young actress is very talented and has a bright future ahead. I am planning to see "No Country for Old Men" this weekend.

4. You are very right about movies released early in the year.
Fincher is releasing a Special Edition of his film next month, unless it has been moved back.

I am dying to see JUNO. So many people have said great things about it. It might be this year's CRASH.

5. You will like it.
I remember years ago when "Breaking Away" won. It was a small movie. I like when that happens.

6. Eastern Promises should have received more attention. Ryan Gosling for "Lars and the Real Girl".
"Across the Universe", aside from some lame song performances, had an astounding breadth of content and imagination. That sort of thing can be SO bad SO quickly, but didn't quite fall into many of the potential traps that can occur.

I'm surprised that "Surf's Up" was nominated for animated feature, but that The Simpsons Movie was not. Persepolis was very good, but Ratatouille was just terrific, and I hope that it wins.

I haven't seen Le Vie en Rose (sp) but have heard that it deserves more than Best Actress nominations.

I hope that Sicko wins the best documentary, and is shown in grade schools as mandatory education.

Perhaps someone could say something against Jar Jar Binks. It still needs to be said.
