7. I Think It Feels Like A Big One Every Decade
I panic at each turn but then realize that there are (hopefully) many more ahead. And looking backward, I am often amazed that I made it this far.

27. Hey! Happy Birthday!
Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 06:12 PM by hatredisnotavalue
I too turned the "50 isn't nifty" last week. Not wanting to waste a celebration in the middle of the week I chose last Friday to celebrate. I planned all week for the affair. I picked out what to wear and what to do. By Thursday night I was skying!
Plans called for picking our youngest up at college at noon, going out to lunch, and making the 3 PM show of Cloverfield.

To some this might sound like a mundane celebration, but I haven't been to the movies in 20 years unless it involved the Power Rangers or LIttle Mermaid. Also, I am usually too cheap to eat lunch out. But not on Friday! I was going to have a Bloody Mary and some really nice haddock or scallop dinner. I was then going to get a cup of gourmet coffee and watch a movie "I" wanted to see!

Well, we were an hour and a half late picking up our son. Which meant no time before the 3 PM showing for dinner. So I got a V8 at a convenience store and we went through the drive thru at McDonald's for burgers for the boys and a fish sandwich for me.

I was a little disappointed, but I really was okay given we were 20 minutes early for the movie. Until we went in to buy our tickets and learned that the projector was broken and the 3 and 5 PM shows were both canceled for Cloverfield.

"Did you want to see Alvin and the Chipmunks?", the ticket agent asked.

We could have made the two hour roundtrip today to do dinner and a movie, but I just didn't have the interest I did last Friday.

Anyway, maraya, Happy Birthday! I hope my little story helps you. Do something nice for yourself today, even if it is ordering out your favorite food and renting your favorite movie.

Tammy

You are needed in the world, there is soooo much to be done! Get out there and lift up others, you will be uplifted too. Series!
I volunteer at our local food pantry and the clothing walk in for our community. I've met very nice people to work with me there, plus I get to help people. A true win-win. I have a friend who gave up going to church and instead goes to a local shelter and loves the dogs and cats. Find something that you can do to help others and you will be very rich indeed!

P.S. Fifty is the new forty! Happy Birthday!

I second the suggestion to do something out of the ordinary and totally for you. Whatever it is that would make you happy. A nice bottle of champagne, maybe, and your favorite dinner.

I'm right behind you. I'll be 50 this summer. In some ways I feel like I'm the same as I was when I was 18, in others I feel every day of those 50 years. Just remember, there will always be good days and there are plenty of people here to make sure you are not totally alone at all.

36. Warning! when I am an old woman, I shall wear Purple
Edited on Sun Jan-27-08 08:06 PM by AZDemDist6
When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple

with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.

And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves

and satin candles, and say we've no money for butter.

I shall sit down on the pavement when I am tired

and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells

and run my stick along the public railings

and make up for the sobriety of my youth.

I shall go out in my slippers in the rain

and pick the flowers in other people's gardens

and learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat

and eat three pounds of sausages at a go

or only bread and pickles for a week

and hoard pens and pencils and beer nuts and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry

and pay our rent and not swear in the street

and set a good example for the children.

We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?

So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised

When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

embrace the crone, she is magik!

Helping your neighbor and caring about your fellow man - and woman.

Yeah, things do get a mite wild over in GD every once in a while, but without it, DU would be a little more mundane!

54. First, Happy 50th
I just turned 50 in October. So as a 50 yr. old who has been alone, I can relate. Just hang in there. 50 is not the end, just the beginning of a wonderful new life. Now we can all scoff at these youngsters who think they know everything. We can get travel and hotel discounts, not to mention discounts on auto insurance. And as far as being all alone, you can find a soul mate. You are a Progressive, heck maybe even a Liberal, so you should have absolutely no problem finding someone. We progressives are smarter, better looking, more agreeable (to an extent), more accepting...well you get the idea. There are more progressives out there than there are neocons and we must never forget this.
Hope it all works out for you, youngster. Here's a little something for you. :toast:  Enjoy! And once again, don't be sad, things will get better.

58. Happy Birthday!
I'm hitting 50 this year too.

Be good to your self, Maraya. Being alone doesn't mean you need to be lonely. One thing that might help you is to find a cause you love and volunteer. It will help you meet friends with similar interests, and let you see how beautiful you are...and help you to realize that you are already in the world.

One thing I've learned over the years is that if you aren't comfortable with yourself, others will not be comfortable around you. Though now and then, you run into people who have a gift for helping others become comfortable with themselves. Though I never met her, reading books by Pema Chödrön is probably the next best thing, for me. You might consider reading "When Things Fall Apart", which was my first experience with her wisdom. I found it wonderfully liberating.

I wish you peace, I wish you love, and I wish you many more happy years.

66. Happy Birthday!
Hey, it's just another birthday...just another number. It hit the same one in a few months...I'm hoping I'll be ok with it!

70. Have a great year. Try doing some stuff out of the ordinary for you. Join
toastmasters or a singles club or a singles club online. There is someone out there for you. Happy Birthday.

72. happy birthday
I'd suggest just trying to get out more (like to a park or some other place), and trying to find an activity that you can enjoy. Taking a class at a community center or volunteering to help somewhere can be both with the added possibility that you may make some new friends as well. It's also not a bad idea to speak with someone professional about this.

73. You say it's your birthday
well it's my birthday too! Here's to us - I see from your profile that we live too far away to get together and have a party, but if we lived closer I'd definitely love to celebrate with a fellow DUer! :toast: Sending you good vibes and happiness on your 50th. :pals:

Now you can join the Over 50 Group (aka The Cool Kids)! Forget about MonkeyFunk's 45-48 Group.

50. It's the new 40.
