30. Well, I have a laundry list of things I want to buy...
But with the holidays over, I figure I'd get it paid off first. I think I'm still working overtime next week. This week was a wash because the boss was sick for a couple of days and the machining center was down, so we just kind of up caught up on stuff.

I like the OT because it adds nearly two hundred bucks a week to my gross. And I just signed up for the company 401(k) for 7.5% of my pay, and short-term disability and some other coverage from AFLIAC. So a lot more is coming out of my paycheck now.

So I'm hoping the OT lasts for a couple of more months, then I'll be all caught up. If it doesn't.. well, I don't do much during the week, so I guess I'll get a part-time job to keep myself busy and earn some extra money. Might as well... otherwise all I do is eat badly while hanging out on DU!

use it to pay down debts to qualify for bigger mortgage (right now I can't buy anything in fully functional condition reasonably close to work) OR use it for down payment/closing costs/property taxes on any house. One way or the other, house. I'm sick of paying half my landlord's mortgage and watching them buy new toys.

:) Glasses are expensive. I know. If your vision has not changed and your rims still have structural integrity and aren't too awful scratched, I don't blame you for holding onto them. I'm frugal too, and often not exactly stylish sometimes because of it.

Though I can't hardly wait to see you sashay through the lounge in your sparkling new rims. :)

70. ALL gifts are tax free, gifts over $12K a year to one person are reportable but still not taxed
Edited on Mon Jan-28-08 11:50 AM by pitohui
the person would have to be giving away a huge sum of money before they have to pay gift tax, when last i checked it was hundreds of thousands of dollars but you'd have to check with the irs for the exact amount as it changes every year, but in any case it's the giver who pays the gift tax, not the receiver of the gift

in the old days, after the giver gave you more than $10K in a single year, she or her tax advisor would have to file the appropriate tax report, however, it was still a gift and nobody paid taxes on it

one of my relatives was in nursing care for a great many years and to reduce the size of her estate, each year her advisor/attorney would distribute $10K a year to each of the heirs -- more than that of course once the amount permitted to be distributed was raised

i have received generous cash gifts and pifling cash gifts, in all cases, as receiver of the cash gift, i have never had to pay any taxes

(this is NOT necessarily true if the gift is some kind of grant, with strings attached, i am talking about pure gifts where i was free to spend the money as i pleased)

also it's my understanding that you can give any amount to pay for another person's medical services, IF you put the money directly in the hands of the doctor/hospital involved, however, if you give the money to the person and they in turn pay the doctor, it's included in the $12K reporting requirement

if receiving a gift, always be sure it IS a gift, some "kept women" have been chased by the irs, which claimed their "gifts" were really payment for sexual services -- if you're getting paid to do something, it ain't a gift, it's earned income

as far as i would i did with the gifts, it varies, anything from buying groceries to buying stuff i otherwise couldn't afford, to be honest, i've had at least one gift giver (my dad) outright say he would rather see me use the money on something i would not otherwise treat myself to -- this keeps the idea of the gift from being lost in the shuffle -- i don't think he'd approve of hookers and blow, no, but i think he enjoys seeing a new camera or nice piece of equipment and being told his gift made it possible
