The brother of a friend of mine was killed Tuesday because of black ice.
VIRGINIA BEACH - Police have identified the man who died on an icy Virginia Beach road Tuesday morning when he was struck by a vehicle while waiting for help after an accident.

Edward Charles Pacheco, a 40-year-old Suffolk resident, was the only fatality on a morning that saw several dozen accidents in Virginia Beach and the southern part of Chesapeake, said Virginia Beach police spokeswoman Margie Long.

Pacheco lost control of his car on Ferrell Parkway, flipping the vehicle over several times. He survived the accident and crawled out of his vehicle and called for help, but a passing commercial vehicle skidded off the icy road and struck Pacheco, killing him.

He SURVIVED his crash, but a Pepsi 18 wheeler skidded into him and killed him. Horrific. Wife, two kids.

2. Racist!
I'm sorry for that - I've been in GD-P.

I'm truly sorry for your friend's loss - it has to be devastating. The only accident I've ever had on the road was due to ice: It's pretty scary.

Everybody drive carefully out there!!

3. That's really sad. Black ice is deadly dangerous
I was involved in the middle of a 8 car pile up with black ice a few years back. Fortunately my car bounced off a curb instead of the skidding cars all around me, so my damage was minimal AND there was a big grassy divider we all were able to get to..because while standing around waiting for the police we watched cars, trucks and buses all spin out on the same patch of ice....

4. That's awful...and it often doesn't matter how good a driver one is-
driving in the winter is bad enough; driving on ice is frightening.

 My best good wishes go out to his family and everyone effected. How sad that he actually survived the crash, only to be hit by the truck. Heartbreaking.

12. I keep hoping that he didn't see the truck heading for him.
I can only imagine the horror of knowing that you are about to die. Poor guy. And, although something this tragic shouldn't happen to ANYONE, he was a very special man. He'll be deeply missed.

14. I hope when I go out it'll be fast like that, though.
I don't want to linger and suffer....

My condolences, once again.

15. Black Ice
    :hi:

I know all about black ice, 15Febree 1985 I was coming home from AirForce, rounding the curve entering Spokane WA, hit black ice, driving 55mph, actually going sideways, you lose all control
and the back end seems to go out from you, saw one of those tall light poles, my car would not stop, i thought i was a gonner......hit the front end, all glass shattered, and i was ok,

got out, went up to the highway, pick up truck hit the same black ice, flipped over median
on its top, i got the 2ladies out, just in time, another pick up truck couldnt stop, hitting
the black ice also, and crunched their truck, they would have been toast, so at least i saved
their lives......  :hi:
