Does anyone have any energy drink recommendations?
I'm not looking for hard core partying, just something to get me through an 8 hour day (I don't like coffee)

2. And you would know this because?

Actually...it's good advice. Besides tasting awful, they are very bad for you.

13. Don't the dangers of energy drinks stem from abuse?
Such as college kids drinking ten of them mixed with vodka?

19. Energy drinks aren't "dangerous" (unless, like you said, they are abused)
Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 11:05 AM by youthere
but they are really bad for you. Besides having ENORMOUS amounts of sugar in them, they can increase your heart rate and blood pressure, and unlike sports drinks (like gatorade) they can cause dehydration.

Believe it or not, an apple will "wake you up" more quickly than an energy drink will (or even a cup of coffee), you''ll get a healthy dose of phytonutrients ( and fiber to boot) plus you don't get the "crash". Swear to dog...an apple. Try it. Try one day with an energy drink of your choosing, pay close attention to how you feel and then try a day where you start the day with an apple, and then have one for a snack when you are starting to drag.

If you are really having difficulty with being run down, I'd STRONGLY suggest you see the doctor...you may have an iron or other vitamin/mineral deficiency that you're struggling with. Really..if you have an underlying health issue, there could be some danger for you to start taking in large amounts of caffeine, sugar or whatever the hell else is in those energy drinks.

I'd also take a good hard look at your eating habits...you may want to adjust your eating to help your blood sugar stabilize during the day (try more frequent smaller meals instead of 2 or three large ones), try to consume slightly more protein and slightly less carbohydrate....and drink lots of water! Lethargy is often caused by dehydration and energy drinks will only exacerbate that. Good luck! It SUCKS being tired all the time.

4. Green tea, or mate.
Skip the "energy" dreck. They are bad for you.

5. I use a electro-lite replacement sports drink mix called Cytomax
for when I go out on 2+ hr bike rides. I'm not sure though if that's what you meant. It doesn't specifically have caffeine in it but it helps keep the energy flowing and the muscles from developing too much lactic acid during long bouts of exercise.

6. The only "energy drink" I could recommend is Emergen-C
which is a mix. No wasted calories or sugar.

Green tea can be good, as it's got caffeine and then some.

I've been reading a lot of good stuff on Beta-Phenylethylamine supplementation, but since it's a norepinephrine turbocharger, I'd talk to a doc first.

18. That's what I use.....
I drink 2 of those per day this time of year to (hopefully) avoid the rampant colds. And the one right before I hit the gym seems to pep me up a little, but not freakishly or with a taste previously likened to Barry Bonds' urine like Red Bull.

It's yummy and good for you, and it's warm.

14. I like Enviga
It has the same amount of caffeine as a cup of coffee so it doesn't leave you wired all day. (I take their claims of weight loss with a grain of salt)

16. Honestly? Water
One of the leading causes of fatigue is dehydration. Energy drinks are notorious for oodles of sugar and caffeine that will only result in a crash later that will leave you feeling even worse. The best thing for maintaining energy through the day is to adopt a grazing method of eating (healthy stuff, not high sugar high fat crap) rather than three large meals and to drink water regularly. You may feel odd for about 48-72 hours, but once you adopt that habit you'll be really surprised how much more energetic you feel. I am not kidding.

:)

sorry, I don't like the energy drinks I've tried - they're all too sweet and/or sweet-tart.

What about tea?

EDIT:
or perhaps Emergen-C or something similar like those Odwalla drinks with lots of vitamin B?
