17. It is a money losing crop
until government subsidies make it profitable

I was trying to find the great image in Food Fight that shows the effects of corn on the US including the food miles

but here is a short summary

Pesticides? made from petroleum
Fertilizer? made from natural gas (did you know that? I didn't)
both of these run off basically into the Mississippi and end up in the Gulf. There is currently a "dead zone" from Galveston to New Orleans that can't be fished. The algae have mutated and they suck up all the oxygen in the water, no fish or shell fish or shrimp nothing (look it up)

the watering holes in the upper midwest that migratory birds used to stop at have been filled in to plant corn (paid to yield not to market) so the birds are getting their water closer to the farm. If there is a bird flu outbreak THIS is how it will spread.

Hedge rows destroyed eliminating entire ecosystems

Oh and here is another great one. At least 4 Million of the "illegals" that they are so worried about USED to be Mexican farmers but they can't grow for as cheap as we sell it for (market flooded) so they gave up their centuries old way of life and came north to provide for their families.

I could go on.

BTW- about 40,000 Egyptian cotton farmers have committed suicide in the last 10 years. We flood the market with that too.

We only subsidize corn, cotton, and soybeans. No meat. No Veggies. No fruit. At least not in any tangible amount. Want to guess what the Fed supported school lunches have and don't have?

13. Most Americans are allergic to either corn, wheat or dairy or a combination
of the three. You don't have to have a violent allergic reaction to be allergic. Sometimes it is just general malaise. Other times stomach troubles or even brain reactions. I have had reactions to formaldehyde in the form of a severe panic attack and unreality feelings. I know it was the formaldehyde because I had just been exposed to it and the other symptoms were swollen lips and tongue.

Because of that I am upset about those fema trailers that are filled with formaldehyde, (paneling, particle board). They put children in those toxic homes.

27. I would crack that window open and let some fresh air in. Also
I have slowly started to buy organic things. I have a sheet set and a robe that are organic and they are wonderful. Unfortunately they are very expensive but the prices are coming down. I also have a room air purifier in my bedroom and living room. They are great too and besides cleaning the air I use them as a sort of fan, (since I am in Florida and it's hot).

Seriously!

I baby-sat my friend's 11 year old last weekend. Great kid btw. I took her to see my friend's band play. It was at a restaurant and we went in for the early show. My mistake was letting the kid have the 2nd Italian Soda, which is basically sparkling water with syruping flavoring added to it. By the second drink she was seriously becoming uncontrolable.

The good thing was by the time we got home she was in the crash & burn mode.

It's become such a big crop that change is going to be hard, maybe impossible. The only thing people can do is cut down on their use of HFCS which may hurt the farmer's in the short run but in the long run, it makes America healthier

57. I definitely think farmers should diversify, but that'll be difficult.
I had a parishioner once, a kind eccentric farmer, who decided to grow less corn and beans. He grew sunflower seeds. But when it came time to harvest them, he had no way to ship or sell them. The local elevator wouldn't touch 'em, because all their space was reserved for corn and beans. He ended up bagging them himself and selling them for birdseed at farmers markets. I doubt he broke even.

I do support farmers who try to sell things other than commodity crops. I belong to a CSA, and buy other products locally. I've said for a long time that there's a problem when they're paying researchers to find uses for a crop. This is ass-backwards. The crop should be grown to meet demand, not the other way around.

But farmers are caught in a bind, as was the man I mentioned above. It takes a lot of work to grow and sell anything other than commodity crops.

But HFCS is just a sweetener, no better or worse than cane sugar or honey. The panic about is just foolishness. People are looking for an excuse for their bad diet other than their own lack of discipline. People eating too much sugar isn't the producers' fault, whether they're producing cane sugar, beet sugar or corn.

56. Actually,
Of the aprox 940 million agricultural acres in the US only about 90 million is used for corn production.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture breaks Corn Usage into three major categories:

Feed/Residual (50.8% of total U.S. corn usage in 2006)
Food/Seed/Industrial (30.1%)
Export (19.1%)

Of the Food/Seed/Industrial (2006)

Ethanol 18.3%
High Fructose Corn Syrup 4.4%
Starch 2.4%
Sweeteners 2.0%
Cereal/Other 1.6%
Alcohol 1.2%
Seed 0.2%

But you can find those without this awful additive.
