Costco vs. BJs Wholesale Club (living wage/Blue business question)
Edited on Tue Jan-29-08 07:31 PM by bunkerbuster1
Well, it seems kind of a Lounge-ish thing. We've been Costco members for a couple of years but the membership expired a couple months ago. Prior to re-upping, we received a free trial membership at BJs wholesale club.

Truth is, BJs is a little more convenient for us, and the annual membership is a bit less. I have no idea if it's anything like Costco as an employer, though, and I don't want to support any business that doesn't pay its people a living wage.

So, does anyone have any light to shed on this? Where can I go to find out if BJs treats its workers fairly? The Wiki entry and the company's website weren't all that much help.

thanks in advance...

5. Been a while since I knew anyone that worked there
but when I did they started out at a good hourly wage and everyone qualified for health insurance, even the 10 hour a week part time people. The person I knew work only 10 hours a week just so her family could have the health insurance since the SO was self employed.

I'll keep investigating, but one data point is a hell of a lot better than none!

9. I had a friend who worked for BJs in a management
position a few years ago, and left after about 18 months because of what she called "borderline abusive" treatment and business practices. She said they paid OK, but expected excessive hours from dept/asst. managers which effectively reduced their hourly pay to less than what some of their part timers were making. My husband has been in retail management for almost 25 years, and he has said that he wouldn't work for them, based on their reputation within the industry.

OTOH, Costco, as I think you know, has a very strong reputation as a true blue business that pays outstanding wages and benefits, develops its employees and treats them fairly.

11. Thanks.
Absent anything more positive on BJs' behalf, I'm inclined to pass on them and re-up at Costco, now.
