Part of why Robert Christgau sucks rubber donkey dicks
He had this pretentious, overreaching twaddle to say about the reductio ad absurdum of teh rock 'n' roll (i.e., greatest rock 'n' roll album ever made, as opposed to the greatest rock album ever made (("Never Mind the Bollocks")) ):

Pussy Galore, Right Now!
All these postdadaists want is to provide the forbidden visceral thrill of rock and roll at the moment they snatch it away as an impossible fake--to be the-thing and not-the-thing simultaneously. How much more could they ask of life? They have fair success, too, commanding an impressive palette of horrible noises and effectuating a pretty good beat for art-rock. But what you remember in the end is the snatch; you're left to mull over a concept that will thrill only those whose lived experience verifies it. Me, I don't find Route 66 has run out of kicks quite yet. B

The Who, the Animals and even the Rolling Stones (especially them, actually) DREAMED of being as toxic and dangerous as Pussy Galore. And Robert Christgau wouldn't know from rock if I gave him a concussion with one. Case closed.

13. I think that's a pretty good review, actually.
Pussy Galore was always a hit-or-miss band. And besides, Robert Christgau may be pretentious, but that's because he can be -- dude's forgotten more about rock music than you or I have ever known.

14. I don't challenge his knowledge, but his taste often leaves much to be desired.
And by that I mean not only his taste in music but his taste in crafting prose.

But to each his own, of course.

By the way, I think Pussy Galore was all hits from "Right Now" straight on through to "Historia de la Musica Rock," with "SugarShitSharp" and "Dial M for Motherfucker" in between. And even some of their earlier stuff was just swell.

16. He is very heavy handed, certainly. As for Pussy Galore...
I think they lacked a little thing called talent, though I'll grant you that Jon Spencer certainly found his muse in later years. It's not enough to just have a snide attitude. If you can't actually play your instruments, you're still going to suck.
