I need to buy a warm winter coat -- preferably a long one
I have a good one, but it is in storage in another state, and it would probably cost me as much to go get it as it would to find one on-sale on-line ...

I'd like it to reach my knees, at at least mid-thigh, if possible. Anyone have any suggestions for good web shopping sites? It needs to be warm enough for a 10-25 degree F range, and water/snow repellent.

Thanks! I'd also like to not spend more than about $100, $150, tops. Even less would be fantastic.

1. I got a peacoat for Christmas
Genuine US Navy issue, sold as surplus, never worn. Beautiful coat with the "fouled anchor" on all the buttons. Absolutely great, and very very warm. Black-dyed (or perhaps navy blue; I can't tell but it looks black to me) wool, made in Boston. I think they were $160.

16. Good for you on that one...
I had that same idea a few years ago, went to the army surplus and got a pea coat, it looked so cool and was absolutely the coldest frickin coat I have ever owned. Went to sears and bought a cheap winter coat with a hood. worked great in minus zero temps in KC.

3. Burlington Coat Factory
try the burlington coat factory:

http://www.burlingtoncoatfactory.com

they have very reasonable prices. my friend has a coat she bought from them this year that goes down to mid-calf and she says it is amazing... warm, waterproof and just the best coat she's ever had.

some coats from their "DOWN" coats section of the website:

5. My wife hates the cold and bought this one from Land's End
http://tinyurl.com/3ak7gp

Really keeps her warm, although she hasn't been out in below 0 temps in it yet. Still, they claim they designed it with Lambeau Field in mind...

11. hm, looks about right!
good price, too.

thanks!

I also found one or two at Overstock.com in my price range, so I think I'll be fine. I have invested in very nice, warm winter coats - had to when I worked in NYC - but they're all in storage and I just want something convenient to buy and warm.

14. That is the one I bought, too.
I needed a long coat with a hood for playground and bus duty. It's been perfect for standing in the elements and it doesn't take up much space.

18. As much as it hurts, the russians wear fur. As do the Inuits...
Here in OK, where 20 is frigid, I wear 3 sweatshirts and a fleece.

8. If you're really looking to save $$$, did you know Goodwill has an "eBay style" auction site now?
Lot's of great bargains there. Just going over to find this link,
I came across a X-long ladies cashmere coat currently at $16 with
only 4 hours of bidding left:

9. Check Goodwill or something like that
I found an awesome leather trenchcoat with a removable inner liner for 25 bucks.

Granted, I'm pretty sure I just got lucky... but still. It's worth checking out.

Marshalls has tons of their winter coats on sale. Eddie Bauer has had stuff on clearance as well. Most stores do atm.

22. I would recommend
going to a resale or charity vintage clothing store and see what they have on hand. This is the time of year where they will be trying to get rid of coats in favor of making room for spring dresses and clothing. I got a Land's End peacoat for 2.50$ last year shopping the clearance rack at my local thrift shop - and the coat still had its tags!

Also, garage sales... if you're into that kinda thing. :silly:
