10-Year-Old Has Baby, Social Workers Shocked

CINCINNATI (AP) -- A 10-year-old girl in the Cincinnati area has given birth in a case that has shocked social workers because the girl is so young.

The birth of the baby at University Hospital in November has set off an investigation.

The baby has been placed in a foster home, and the mother -- who is now 11 -- is living with a relative.

Prosecutors suspect that the boyfriend of the 11-year-old's mother is the father of the baby. Police from suburban Lockland are interviewing 40-year-old Michael Chaffer in a Columbus jail where he's been held on unrelated charges

This poor child was more than likely abused my her mother's "boyfriend" - he should be castrated and the mother, unfortunately does bear some responsibility...

Girls mature much faster these days - I am curious if the preservatives in our foods have something to do with it?

but probably hormones that are injected into chickens and other animals for whatever reason...

There are also cases of precocious puberty in girls and gynomastica in boys that seem to be related to added hormones in meat and milk. In some cases early or late onset of menses can run in families, as well.

That said, puberty at ten isn't all that unusual. Sexual activity leading to pregnancy is, and a body able to sustain a pregnancy might be, but puberty itself would only be a year or so ahead of expectations.

When I was a kid a neighbor's mother worked at a local hospital, and they'd had a ten year old mother there, too. It happens. The youngest mother on record, Lina Medina, was five.

may be linked to higher body weights in grade schoolers -- 110 pounds seems to be the magic number to trigger puberty. Another theory is the number of hours of light per day (all light, not just sunlight) -- TV watching, indoor lighting and computer light.

school with a couple of girls in the 50's who had periods at the ages of 9 and 10. I assume that they were capable of conceiving.

I also understand that the fat in our diet causes girls to mature earlier.

that the infants born to these young "women" are going to potentially have some major quality of life issues.

At 10 I was still playing with Barbies and thought boys were kind of gross.

although I withold judgement on the mother's boyfriend, unless there is physical evidence to prove so. Many, many times they are wrong.

Many moons ago when I worked as a rape crisis counselor I would hear stories like this one. It was before DNA testing. The cops would get a court order for a paternity test to find the father. The saddest one I remember was the older brother of a 13 year old girl had impregnated her.

I hope that child gets the counselling and help she will need.

We has several that were 12 and 13 but the one that got to us all was the girl who was 10 when she got pregnant and just over 11 when she delivered. Her MOTHER told her she got that way from 'standing too close to a boy'. It wasn't until she got into the sex ed classes that she was able to put things together and tell us that it was her uncle.

Worse than her having the baby from incest was the family's reaction. The girl was not permitted to release the baby for adoption. She was browbeaten into keeping it as a 'reminder of her sin'.

I never did hear how the case going through our DSS worked out...social workers from the home trying to get the state to step in to protect both the girl and the baby.

It's amazing how many fucked up people we have living in this world. How do people like that make it past the age of 20 w/out accidentally putting their heads in a wood chipper to see how they work?

Unfortunately, as residential aides, we weren't privy to the doings of the social workers and I left there before the gossip could filter down.

If not, either she or her child (or both) could likely have ended up dead, with more children before she was 15 or killing someone.

A truly sick person would have sex with a ten year old girl, probably nine when she was impregnated.
