Was I being a B*tch...? Loaded question alert.
Edited on Wed Aug-06-03 02:52 PM by MrsGrumpy
We were out shopping today, and I stopped at a 7-11 to get the kids a slurpee. I walk up to the counter and the man says, meanly,"You buyin a lottery ticket" and I said,"no, do I have to?" and he replies,"you're on the wrong side of the counter." (there's a wrong and a right register for slurpee purchases?) A woman comes up and says," don't worry, I've got you." Mr Happy procedes to make a face at me and walk away. As I am putting my change away I say blithely," Get him to smile a little and we'll come back." (Said with a wink) He procedes to yell,"BITCH", and that walks away muttering,"another damned whelper". So........ I turn around, walk back in, and calmly ask his name, and an administrative phone number, to which he replies he is going to call the cops if I don't remove my F*cking A$$ from the premises. So I told him to go ahead and call them. (fuming now) No phone # is given so I actually, for once, took the time to call up another store, get the main number, talk to a customer service rep, give them a store number and description of said employee...all the while he is obscenely gesturing at me through the windows, in front of my kids. Should I have let this go??? I just get tired of crappy customer service, I don't want the guy to lose his job (okay, part of me does, but he may have been having a REALLY bad day) I just don't want other people to deal with this. What's your opinion....that is if you made it thus far.

2. Excellent! And I'd write a letter to the company, too
I've written a few nasty letters about service people and/or conditions in restaurants/stores.

People like him shouldn't be serving people, and I'm glad you took the initiative to give him hell. Bad enough he was surly, but that he called you a bitch?

Go all out guns ablazin' on that swine.

12. Yes, letters always accomplish more than phone calls.
Write down all the details, and mail it in.

4. you were right to report him
Sounds like he had a bad attitude towards customers from the start. And your comment before he started spouting obscenities was just not that provocative.

In any case, once he started yelling and swearing, he definitely crossed the line.

were with me...Mom=whelper. That's the only definition I know of .

6. Someones bad day does not
make it right. I know, he could have had this or been that but calling you a bitch was not right under any circumstances. Was there a sign that said lottery tickets only? It must not have been very clear. I would have done the same, especially with my kids around.

9. no that guy is just rude
it is his job to at least be polite, but to call you a bitch is totally wrong. I am sure who ever owns the store would appreciate you telling them that one of their employees is acting like this.

10. No you weren't a bitch.
He was. If he were a woman there would have been no dispute as to who had earned that title.

If I owned an operated a market of any kind I'd definitely want to know that any one of my employees was rude to a guest or customer. Maybe it was just one single bad day, but that's for his employer to know and decide upon.

11. You did right. You are not a bitch.
I don't care what kind of bad day he was having. If it was so bad, he should've taken a personal day, rather than subjecting customers to abuse.

Were I his employer, not only would I fire him, I'd look into initiating a lawsuit for lost customers against him.

he had NO business calling you one.

He should be fired on the spot for that. Call the cops? did he own the store?

14. It may not be a GREAT job..but I bet there are persons out there
that would LOVE to have his job, and do a good job to boot? Why he is angry is a good question, but why wait till he murders everyone in the store to quell his anger?

15. Nope. I would have done the same...
Except he probably would have called me a rat bastard, since I am a guy.

As a plugged in comsumer, I try to alert a company when they provide exceptionally bad service. I also try to let a company know when they do exceptionally well.

I think in the meantime, I would find a different source for my slurpees, unless they kiss up to you in a BIG way.

16. Thanks to you all for the vote of confidence. I am waiting to hear back
from a representative of 7-11. It was extremely difficult not to walk back in there.

***funny side note-I am 33 and when I was talking to my Dad (Daddy) on the phone, telling him about it, he asked me what he looked like, what he was wearing. I do think he was going to go and defend his little girl's honor. I guess one never really does grow up...in the eyes of their parent.

How does anyone justify acting like that? I think you were maybe too kind. I would have dumped my slurpees on his head and said oops.

19. the guy sounds crazy
I wouldn't worry about someone like him losing his jobs he deserves too!
What if he would of hit you? He sure seems to have some anger management problems and it sounds like it might be best for all if he's not in a customer service job.

I could maybe overlook his being short (an ass) with you and not giving a smile (okay maybe somebody just cussed this guy out?) but he crossed the line when he yelled the B word at you.

For what it's worth I think you did the right thing. Sorry you got treated so mean, like life isn't hard enough?

ps I'm a dummy head what is a whelper? I looked it up...no such word in the dictionary is it a spin off of the word welfare????

I googled it and got that it was something you put a dog in when she nurses keeps her from rolling over on the pups. A Whelper Helper? I'm serious. :+

20. Is that #$%^&** guy STILL working there?.
I had EXACTLY the same experience in S Minneapolis in 1987 except that
I was having a bad day and ended up leaving the slurpees upside down on the counter and walking out with my two kids giggling leaving him standing with his mouth hanging open. (Minnesota nice myth was still partially in effect then).

22. Bravo!
The guy should consider himself lucky you aren't bringing him up on assault charges. There's no excuse for being so abusive to a stranger for no reason. If he'll just go postal on you like that, imagine how many times he's done it to other people or might to others in the future unless somebody stands up to him and makes him take respectful notice that this kind of behavior is unacceptable?

24. He should be fired
His entire job revolves around providing service for the customers who patronize that store. Not only did he refuse to provide you the service he is being paid to, but he was rude and abusive without provocation. His behaviour would have been unacceptable even if you HAD been a bitch, but I think that's irrelevent. I'd have written a letter to the damn CEO of the company to get the guy fired.

Service in the US sucks, and we need customers need to demand better.

Besides, it's a "whelper's" duty to protect her brood.

If I were the other employee I would have called the cops out of my own fear about this guy.

30. What he did is basically a firing offense.
Sorry, but there are enough people looking for jobs to warrant dismissing someone who clearly doesn't understand basic deportment. The guy clearly has issues. I hope his manager will talk to him and let him know why he isn't employable -- at least not with the public.
