Oh Dear God I Hate Patronizing Doctors!!!!
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 03:30 AM by annagull
We go to a research facility, they give us an intern and she is the talking to us like we're 2 year olds! Seriously, an important time in our lives and this woman, in the highest happy-camper pitch you can imagine says, "I've got great neeeewwws! You don't have _______ we are concerned about your stress so we are referring you to our psychology department!!!! Isn't that great?"

.......I have a condition that is called 'Esprit de Scaliya' (sp)
The translation is the 'words you should have said at that moment, but didn't'. I find this true especially witth doctors, and I think they prey on this. My apologies to the true doctors out there who do their work better than their brethern, but this has really got to stop. Who do they think they are talking to when they do that? C'mon, we're all adults here. You idiots make me feel worse with all the baby talk.

Just as a footnote: We are normal people with normal jobs in our 30's--my heart knows and goes out to the retired population, now I know what you're going thru!!!!

1. Yeah - I know what you mean
But I have found that a referral to "psych" means more likely than not that they do not know what is wrong with you. Or if you were made ill by chemical exposures - they don't want to get involved.

Good luck - I hope you find good care and accurate diagnosis.

2. Thanks and you are right
I could see the wheels turning in that idiots head--and I know this is not some "psycho-sematic" disease, they just took the easy way out, and it was disappointing because we were at a research hospital and thought it wouldd be our answer. Just goes to show you, assholes are everywhere. We are not dissuaded, we are going out of state to get care.

5. Psychosomatic Illnesses Are Real Illnesses
Stress can cause terrible symptoms, from forgetfulness and inability to concentrate to hypertension and stroke. Take them and their treatment seriously.

6. Do recall half were in the lower part of their class.
They can be madding and my son was very ill and I went with him and it almost drove me nuts some were so God Like. Both my son and I knew most did not know a thing as this illness only had been found under 10 times world wide. Friends went in to a medical lib. and looked it up and got the records.Calif hospitals were better than Boston.

7. With all due respect
Speaking from experience, health care workers have to deal with ALL types of people, different ages (we say from womb to tomb), different levels of understanding. Not all people are as smart as you and some are intimidated by complicated medical issues. When dealing with first encounters, essentially strangers, sometimes you dumb things down, hell, who knows why. You mentioned the retired population as an example. One of the most painful things in my experience is the loss of facilities, including mental capabilities, that come with age. Honestly and regretfully sometimes a person in their 70's truly needs "kiddie-glove" treatment.

I'm sorry to hear of your experience. It sounds like you had a newbie doc. She was trying to be helpful, I'm sure she'll learn.

8. I Can Relate. This Is A True Story For You
My neurologist was the guy who confirmed my MS. Up to that point, i had considered him a clinician who was investigating my malady, but had not considered him MY doctor. Just an analyst, of sorts.

When the MS was confirmed, he became my care provider. Knowing that and being unsure of his tone, i laid it out on the line for him. I told him flat out (but as politely as was possible), "I have a certified IQ of 180, and three graduate degrees. I'm a smart guy and if you ever talk down to me, i'll find myself a different doctor."

His response was "No problem. I would prefer discussing things as peers." Pretty cool guy, huh?

He has been nothing but ideal for me in the intervening 8.5 years. The Professor
