why are Leno's ratings higher than Letterman's?

lack of it. I love to laugh so I turned on the late night shows in the beginning but there was nothing there.

Leno is bland, bland, bland. Lot's of Americans don't like edgy.

mainstream and simple, like himself! Letterman's humor is more dry and mature than Leno's.

Leno got Grant first after the whole Divine Brown thing. Up till that point Dave had always been high, but since then Jay has stayed in the lead.

Letterman is not edgy. His sense of humor is smart ass childish. Leno tells formula jokes.

Early in the fight, Leno had a producer who demanded that people appear with Leno first to promote their films and stuff, and that they would be permanently banned if they appeared on any other show: Letterman, Arsenio, Dennis Miller, etc. This generallyl worked. Only Letterman had the clout to do this also, but he refused to be that ruthless. But the big break came when Hugh Grant was caught in Hollywood with Divine Brown, a local hooker who was giving him a blow job. Hugh was dating Elizabeth Hurley at the time, so obviously he is an idiot. Anyway, Hugh was already scheduled to appear on the tonight show within a few nights, and he kept the appointment. After that people just tuned in more. It has never changed since.

I also think that Letterman is more keyed to New York than Leno is to Burbank/LA, making the appeal more regional.

rating among those who stay up for late night TV. On most, if not all, weeknights NBC wins the 10 o'clock slot outright and when they lose it isn't by much. Law and Order, ER, and Law and Order SVU win outright. Dateline and Meet the Parents lost but won among young viewers. That is an insurmoutable lead for Letterman to recover if Leno can get interesting enough guests to keep people watching.

....and he has a lot more "Emmy's" then Leno....... Leno??? Wasn't he one of the Marx Brothers.

Letterman used to be funny, WAY back when when he was on NBC. Then he got into a rut where he repeats the punchline from his lamest joke over and over like it is so funny that his joke wasn't funny. Also, Paul Shaffer is the worst fucking sidekick ever.
Jay Leno can crack some good jokes, and his sidekick is less irritating.

Hollywood location makes it easier for Leno to get the top notch guests..
