Please help me get through this day.

An hour ago I got a phone call here at work. My aide, Emily, was in a car accident last night and died. She was 19 years old. She was a sociology major in college. She was smart, funny, and a great help to me here. She was just here last night, until 7 with me.

I don't know what to think. I'm in shock. I can't stop crying. Please help me make it through this day of work.

If you can, try to leave work early and do something kind for yourself and to honor her in some small way. It always hurts more when a young person dies suddenly.

Depending on what the family wants, you can also send flowers from the office.

One of my employees had a massive heart attack on his way home from work. He was younger than I am, and had 2 small daughters. It ripped me apart.

My best advice to you is don't sit on your feelings. At my store, we created a board on which anyone could place their memories of my employee. I also established a memorial fund to help his children. But it still took everyone quite some time to get over it.

I know how tough this is. My heart goes out of you and the girl's family. Good luck to you.

I have gone to a nearby Church for an hour of quiet and prayer when death has entered my life. For me, this helps a lot.

There is no way to make any sense of it.:( When my best friend's 24 yr old son was killed last year (also a car accident), it just sends the message even stronger... the message: enjoy every day that you have, you never know when it's your "turn".. How awful for her family too..

As you may know, my dog died of a brief illness in June. But, of course, that is hardly anything compared to losing an aide in something like that. I can hardly imagine what you are probably going through.

Hope that the love everyone had for Emily will help you all get through this tragedy.

Minute by minute, as you all suggested, I am getting through this day. I'm sure not getting any work done, but the phones are getting answered and the patients are getting scheduled and that's about all they're going to get out of me today.

The therapists keep coming to me and telling me they can't concentrate on their patients, shouldn't we close? Well, yes we should, but our executive director won't let us, so we're all still here, limping through.

Misery tends to seek out a light-hearted day like yesterday and do its damnedest to clobber positivity into the ground. I had a similar experience many years ago, and it still hurts to think about it now.

Wow, I'm so sorry for Emily, her friends, family, and colleagues. Take care of yourelf, Cat!

Dear cat, there seems nothing more tragic than such a pointless and premature death of such a bright light. I know there can be no satisfactory explanation. You just need to feel your grief and think of the good times you had with Emily. Maybe there is some comfort you can offer her family and help each other get through this terrible time.

What a tragic loss. I think you may just have to go with the crying and grieving for now. What a shock.

Something similar happened in my workplace recently and we finally gave up work and sat around telling stories about our coworker. It was very helpful but that was a luxury many workplaces can't afford. They also brought in grief counselors the next day which was helpful to many. Talk through it if you can.

I hope all the grieving can find peace somehow.

I almost think that it is a good thing that you are all staying at work, together. You should try to get everyone to do something kind, together, for Emily's family.

My condolences go out to you. You were blessed in being able to talk to her last night.

Thank God, our executive director is allowing us to close early, so we cancelled our late afternoon and evening patients, and our last patient is at 3:00, then we get to go home and deal with this. As much as we'd like to sit around and talk about it (as many of you suggested, and it's a good suggestion) we can't, because we have patients to treat. Once we realy start talking about it, we're going to lose it and not be able to put it back together, and not be able to treat patients. So we're just walking around like zombies, waiting for it all to be over.

I dont live very far from you and I have been following the story. I dont know what to say. So I am sending you one big cyberhug

I'm with you in spirit, Cat. Take care.

So, we found out more about what happened. Those of you who live in the Virginia area have seen it on the news. Emily was struck from behind by a speeding tractor trailor, which went over her car and smashed into the truck in front of her. I pray to God that she was killed on impact, because I can't imagine how terrifying it would have been for her, and how painful. The driver of the truck has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, and will live with that image over and over again in his head until the day he dies.

Knowing what happened in the accident, I think, makes it worse, because it's so horrible and scary, and she was such a sweet and wonderful girl, that I hate to think of her being in so much pain or being so afraid. I pray it was over quickly.

I am crying right now typing these words. The funeral is Monday, and I cannot even imagine the pain her family is going through right now. I am afraid to see them, and I don't want to go, and yet I am so glad I'm going. Does that make sense?
