I like "God Bless America" better than the "Star Spangled Banner"...
And I also like "The maple leaf forever" better than "O'Canada."

You?

1. "God Bless America" is a third-rate show tune.
Irving Berlin, fa chrissakes.

I'd pick either "America The Beautiful" or "My Country 'Tis of Thee" (the rip-off of 'God Save the Queen'.)

11. Rule Britannia was originally written as part of a masque
If memory serves me, it was a duet sung by Alfred the Great and his queen.

3. personally i love the star spangled banner
if it is sung well it can actually be very touching. my problem is that a bunch of crappy singers sing it. i think it is one of the prettier national anthems(although i might be a bit biased ;) ).

Why don't you acknowledge that the real Canadian song is "Gens du pays"

14. I second "This Land is Your Land"
Could it be a flashback to the fourth grade harpsichord solo I got to play in a patriotic play?

25. Woody wrote it as response to GBA
GBA isn't a very inclusive song. Quite the opposite, actually. I don't think that a proposed national anthem should exclude everyone who doesn't happen to believe in a personal diety.

10. The Maple Leaf is a great piece of music
The lyrics don't really seem to suit modern-day Canada (Wolfe the dauntless hero; thistle, shamrock, rose entwine the maple leaf).

Sing it with me, boys: "I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free..." :scared: :scared: :scared:

I hate God Bless America, I'll take the Star Spangeld Banner. I've never heard The Maple Leaf Forever but I like O' Canada quite a bit. And being a big hockey fan I can even sing the French version.

16. I like the Star Spangled Banner. It unites the country in a way that no other song really can.
That's because NO ONE can sing it. If *that* doesn't get a stadium-full of people together, nothing really can.

And I prefer O Canada, too.

17. Nope, "Star Spangled Banner" it is, for two reasons:
1. It was written in Baltimore

AND

2. Orioles fans get to shout "O!" when the song gets to "O Say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave...."

"God Bless America" affords neither.

18. No votes for "We are the Beaver"?
www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDs5oTZhncM

by The Arrogant Worms

The US is the eagle, Russia is the bear,
Australia is the kangaroo, cause they're kind of weird down there.
Yeah, India is the tiger, that stands so proud and tall,
But Canada is the greatest of them all.

We are the beaver, we're furry and we're free
Yeah, we are the beaver, we got two big front teeth
Yeah, we are the beaver, we can chew right through small trees
We are the beaver, we are the beaver, we are the beaver.

You might think a rodent is a pretty lame choice
For a national animal, but don't you listen to that voice.
No, cause all them birds and preditors, just take from the land
But the beaver, always gives a dam.

We are the beaver, we got cute little webbed feet
Yeah, we are the beaver, it's bark we like to eat
Yeah, we are the beaver, a nickel we complete.
Yeah, we are the beaver, we are the beaver, we are the beaver.

The eagle flies the sky above and swoops down on its prey
The big bear will maul anyone who dares gets in its way
The tiger is the greatest of the hunters today.
But the beaver it can build dams. Yeah,
The beaver it can build dams, dams, dams.

We are the beaver, we slap our tails when danger's nearby
We are the beaver, we got waterproof hides
Yeah, we are the beaver, we got big bums and beady eyes.
We are the beaver, we are the beaver, we are the beaver.

We are the beaver, our name is often used as a double entedre
We are the beaver, cause in Canada, both French and English belong
Yeah, we are the beaver, and the subject of this song is
We are the beaver, we are the beaver, we are the beaver.
I can't hear you.
We are the beaver, we are the beaver, we are the beaver
Are you getting the point?
We are the beaver, we are the beaver.
We are the beaver

19. I like "The Internationale" better than any of them.
Rousing, Loud, Inspiring.

Even in RUSSIAN it makes you want to get up and MARCH.

If I have to select an AMERICAN though, Go with Sousa: "Stars and Stripes."

21. I am amazed that "Star Spangled Banner started out as a drinking song
- with the word "Anacreon" in the lyrics, no less. Some impressive drunks back in the day, if they could actually sing that impossible melody.

I like "America the Beautiful" much better too.
