1. Tell me about her.
Honestly, the best gifts show thought and ingenuity. I dated a semi-pro chess player once. I bought her a rare set of antique chess pieces...you have thought it was made of diamond from the way she reacted.

6. I'm thinking a picnic....
complete w/ music.

As for the gift, I dunno, but if you give it to her on a picnic, that will go over big, I think.

8. Gift: Really nice picnic basket, with nice plates, wine glasses, cheese board (wood)
Then, baby sitter for the urchin, and a ROMANTIC picnic in ........ the woods!

Somewhere in the picnic basket (filled with her favorite treats, or course) a nice handwritten note that after 5 years, the romance is just beginning.

Trust da momma on this one ;)

11. Outside. (I'm just exploring one area to get you brainstorming.)
What kind of outdoor activities? Some ideas.

Hiking? Walking stick, hiking boots, trail conservation sponsorship.

Outdoor relaxation? Wooden patio set (or a pair of wooden chairs), beverage set. (i.e. 4 matching glasses with a matching pitcher.) Depending on budget and space, you could get a nice porch, patio, or gazebo built.

Outdoor sports? I have no idea. It would depend on her sporting interests. My mom is a golfer, so my stepfather bought her new woods for 5 year anniversary.

Gardening/Landscape? A nice set of wood-handled gardening tools, wooden outdoor decor or a nice decorative tree. (If you call a local arbor society, they'll be able to tell you what is suitable for your area, terrain, pretty, and native.)

Hunting? (I'm veggie so I'm hoping it's not hunting.) I'd say a really-nice wood-stocked rifle, but I think guns send a mixed message as a gift.

Camping? A camping trip or camping gear.

on the water? Canoe or Kayak.

I hope I got the wheels turning...I'm sure she'll love whatever you choose.

4. If she's a cook, a hard wood salad bowl set could get you
major points. A wooden objet d'art could also please. If she's into environmental concerns and your situation allows, a tree or trees planted in her name would be special. The Arbor Society has some excellent selections.

5. Whatever you get, ALWAYS include flowers. LOTS OF THEM.
I always buy 3 bouquets of 1 dozen roses: one each red, yellow, and pale pink. I have the florist combine them, and get them home before she gets there and arrange them in one of her favorite hand-made vases.

I could buy her a dog poop scooper after that and she'd love it.

7. To the fine suggestions above, I will add only...
...that you should thank her for the wood she still gives you.

15. Excellent.
A redwood trellis - won't rot. Recommend a classic climbing rose 'New Dawn'. Very hardy, blooms thru the summer, a silvery, pale pink, a strong, fruity scent - one of the immortals.

13. Traditional looks good, except for year 14
Ivory isn't easy to find, or shouldn't be.

Maybe an antique with inlays.

Or a new pool table with faux ivory balls. That seems like an awesome gift!

14. Listen to her
Has she ever said she likes ___? Or walked by a store and admired something?
The gifts I appreciated the most were the ones that my SO showed he had listened to me. I remember seeing some earrings and saying how pretty they were. He got them for me a week later. It's so nice to know he cares enough to really listen to me.
