Any suggestions for a good baby shower gift?
Apparently the Dad-to-be's family threw a separate shower, so I'm trying to think of something useful but not obvious, that they might not have already bought for Mom and Kidlet.

It's their first, and a girl, if that helps. I'm way more of a granola mom than she is likely to be, and my kid's halfway grown (already!?!) so I'm pretty out of touch with the whole baby thing and I don't know what a more conventional mom might find useful.

1. A friend of mine got a kit to make an imprint of a hand or foot...
The one I saw was in a silver case. It's really cute and I thought quite unique.

4. Those are fun and appreciated.
On the practical side, if it's a first child getting some larger infant size onesies seems to go over well -- most gifts are for newborns.

2. You can never go wrong with Onesies. They are very useful.

If you want something off the chain toxic cute...

There's this:

Or you could spring for some gift certificates for some pizza delivery.

With a new baby....? Trying to get a meal cooked can seem like a monumental task.

10. I got a lot of mileage out of the ones that snap down the front, too.
If I don't think of anything else, I think I'll just grab a couple of those.

3. 8 week old puppy.
Exactly what a couple needs when about to bring a new baby into the world. A puppy. It's like having two babies, only without the second tax deduction.

8. Buy some cute outfits sized for 6-9 or 9-12 months old
She may not use them right away, but once the baby starts to really grow, she will be able to have something to dress baby in.

baby swings. Definitely. Nothing soothes a crying baby and gets them to nap better. Really!

13. yeah, 12-18mos will be appreciated
it sounds a-mallingly disgusting, maybe, but baby gap used to have the softest, longest wearing onesies. I handed mine down and they were still in great condition.

14. The appropriate gift for a first child is always a case of Port.
Vintage Port. Which are then to let age until the child turns 21, and the Port is perfectly ready to drink.

I've given those to several moms-to-be, and they've told me after the baby was born that they love them.

22. Depends on how practical you want to be
Practical:

Diaper Genie
Bouncy chair (a godsend! MG Jr. didn't much like the swing but he looooved the bouncy chair)
Diaper service/many disposable diapers depending on their preference
Sun hat/kiddy sunblock
Baby toiletries (bath soap, lotion, brush/comb, etc.)

Not practical (but fun):

Dreamcatcher
Books--Mother Goose rhymes, All I See Is Part of Me, The Giving Tree, Mary Cicely Barker's Flower Fairies; or bath books (the vinyl-covered spongy ones, good for bath but also for mealtime, as they clean right up--kid can chew on them too)
Pooh blanket with chew corners--they have it at Target--MG Jr. loved his and I just gave one to my friend's daughter for her new baby girl (it comes in green, too): http://www.target.com/Classic-Pooh-Security-Blanket-Teether/dp/B000M29I2M/sr=1-14/qid=1209783897/ref=sr_1_14/601-1505525-3072955?ie=UTF8&pricerange=&index=target&field-browse=1038590&rh=k%3Apooh&page=3

One thing I noticed at my friend's daughter's shower--she got a LOT--and I mean a LOT of fleece blankets--the kind where you just buy a block of fabric at JoAnn's or wherever and clip the fringe. Might want to stay away from those.

24. If they already have "stuff", give them TIME. Trust me- it'll matter more to them, REAL soon.
A personal "gift certificate" good for an evening where you come over
and make dinner for them, and clean up after...

That might seem a bit "weak" to them now... but once that newborn
is 3 or 4 weeks old, they'll bow to you as a GOD for having the brilliance
to offer them the gift of a few moments of FREE TIME.

25. My niece got some things that I never would have
thought of. One was a rubber duck that changes color if the water is too hot for baby. Another was a baby-proofing kit...cabinet door latches and outlet covers.

A lead testing kit might also be in order to check some of those other things she got that had to have come from China.

I love these support pillows! Your arms can get tired holding even the tiniest baby for any length of time.

27. I second the diapers or couple of month of diaper service idea.
I got my sister gift certificates from the Pampers website (she would NOT do cloth diapers). She loved them! I was very appreciative of everyone who got diapers for us when we had our twins, especially when they got in bigger sizes so we could stockpile. Wipes were hlepful also.
