21. We had two pass away in 2004 and one in 2005.
I missed Prairie Dog who passed away while I was in MD without my wife and daughter, and truffle late that fall. Ben passed away on Thanksgiving evening 2005 just shy of a year old.

5. a song by a band
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjBvPHqO9KU

Tuesday afternoon.
I'm just beginning to see,
Now I'm on my way.
It doesn't matter to me,
Chasing the clouds away.
Something calls to me.
The trees are drawing me near,
I've got to find out why.
Those gentle voices I hear
Explain it all with a sigh.
I'm looking at myself, reflections of my mind.
It's just the kind of day to leave myself behind.
So gently swaying through the fairy-land of love,
If you could just come with me and see the beauty of
Tuesday afternoon.
Tuesday afternoon.
Tuesday afternoon.
I'm just beginning to see,
Now I'm on my way.
It doesn't matter to me,
Chasing the clouds away.
Something calls to me.
The trees are drawing me near,
I've got to find out why.
Those gentle voices I hear
Explain it all with a sigh.

6. I didn't want anything political -- I remember that much
I like the flax plant - useful, pretty, and I like bees and honey. Sort of a weird choice, but hey, it's worked. :hi: Mad! Hugs to Sonia!

From wiki: The leaves are glaucous green, slender lanceolate, 20-40 mm long and 3 mm broad. The flowers are pure pale blue, 15-25 mm diameter, with five petals. The fruit is a round, dry capsule 5-9 mm diameter, containing several glossy brown seeds shaped like an apple pip, 4-7 mm long.

In addition to referring to the plant itself, "flax" may refer to the unspun fibres of the flax plant.

Flax is grown both for its seeds and for its fibers. Various parts of the plant have been used to make fabric, dye, paper, medicines, fishing nets and soap. It is also grown as an ornamental plant in gardens.

Someone told me they were having a argument with someone about the Iraq War in the parking lot after church. Someone who joined in to listen couldn't help make their opinion known: "Hell, those people don't believe in Jesus or nothing!"

My screen name is obvious if you know I live in South Carolina, although someone once blasted me for it because they read it as scantily clad GOPers and had a vision of Rush and Cheney in thongs.

Edited on Tue May-06-08 11:35 AM by adsosletter
"Adso's Letter" is a letter wriiten by a 10th century monk; Adso wrote "Letter on the Origin and Time of the Antichrist" to the Frankish Queen Gerberga around 950 CE, in response to her inquiry as to whether Norse raids along the French coast signalled the appearence of the "pre-cursors of Antichrist."

It held significance for me at the time because it demonstrated the psychological impact the raids were having.

EDIT: ...the Norse raids also seem to be effecting my spelling abilities... :dunce:

Often used in the phrase "kama'aina discount", really a sneaky way for hotels, restaurants, etc. to charge us the actual price while marking it up for the tourists.

Although I had been around less than a year when I delurked, there were (and are :( ) very few Hawai'i posters here, so I grabbed it for myself.

Joe. I found him on my college's campus in 1999, on the day that Joe DiMaggio died (hence his name). We knew absolutely nothing about his past, other than he was trained as a hunting/tracking dog. I think he was either a full beagle or a beagle-basset cross. Shortly before I signed up at DU, he died at the approx. age of 16 or 17.

Joe was a true 4-pawed populist. He didn't care about race, creed or religion. He cared about long walks, restorative naps, and whether or not you were going to finish that sandwich.:D

I'd prefer to just use 'Tirade', but I think that was taken when I signed up. It was one character who was split into two seperate beings. One representing light, and one representing dark. Since the one representing the dark side was a bit cooler and less whiny than the other one, I usually prefer to use Dark Tirade if I have to choose one of the two. :P

Proud member of the E Street Nation ( i.e. fanatic Springsteen fan), and I live in Albuquerque. And chose the picture ( not that you asked) of Marley because like Bruce ( and my other great rock n roll hero, Joe Strummer of the Clash), Bob talked the talk AND walked the walk. I'm a musician ( among other things) here in Albq. and hope that before I'm too old to rock and roll ( feels like that's rapidly approaching) I'll have the opportunity to be in an overtly political band, but maybe my time for that possibility has passed; hopefully some younger guys will carry the torch...Meanwhile, to all of you that have seen or will see the E Street Band on this tour ( they're not scheduled to come within 7 or 8 hundred miles of here) I'm INSANELY jealous.

64. I had an apricot poodle named Awsi
My younger sister named him, when she was infatuated with an Australian band called INXS. I have no idea why it because Awsi instead of Aussie but she preferred that spelling. Come to think of it, I think she called him Awesome Dude the first few days so that usage had the "w".

Dooger is what I called a dog when I was a young kid. My parents got a kick out of it so it stuck, to this day. When I see a dog I'll think, "there's a nice looking dooger..."

Anyway, when I was registering on message boards early this decade Awsi was laying beside me so I decided to honor him with my user name.

He was put to sleep in July 2005, about two months shy of 16.

89. Why is that, do you think?
Do you suppose it's because of the awful time Estonians had under Soviet rule, and somehow they equate communism with liberalism and so just automatically veer in the opposite direction?

It's really too bad - Estonians are so intelligent and creative to be stuck in some stupid conservative reactionary dogma. I mean, it's not out of any religious dogma, as far as I know.

What do you attribute it to?

93. My theory
When the Soviets took over Estonia toward the end of WW2, the left-leaning ones mostly stayed in Estonia, and the Nazis and other right-wingers fled the country. Most of the Estonians who came to the U.S. in the late 1940s were bitterly anti-Communist right wingers. Estonians in Estonia today are generally far more liberal than Estonian-Americans.

My father was an exception. His family was Socialist, and he had a minor political job when the Nazis invaded. My father had to flee the Nazis with a price on his head. My mom, who was also Socialist in her political leanings, had to flee when the Soviets came to arrest her landlord because he was a boy scout leader - something considered right-wing by the Soviets. My parents met at a displaced persons camp in Germany after the war, and managed to come to the U.S. in 1949.

Although I was sent to Estonian Saturday school and summer camp, my parents didn't like most of the parents of the other kids, and I didn't learn until years later that it was because of their right-wing politics. My parents wouldn't let me go to scout camp because they considered it fascistic. As a college student, I was kicked out of the NY Estonian House for wearing anti-Vietnam War slogans on my jacket. During the late 60s it was even considered incorrect to wear red clothing among Esto-Americans.

I avoided interacting with Esto-Americans for many years until finally finding a few other liberals via the internet.

69. I needed to come up with a Hotmail handle fast
When I bought my first Windows machine back in the eighties. I'd been PC_Crone on the local BBS, but that was already taken, so I just combined my first name and the name of my state, Damon Runyon style. This was way before Florida disgraced itself in the 2000 election, so I've since come to regret the choice from time to time. But it's still unique, oddly enough. I thought there'd be at least a dozen more, given the population of this state and how common my first name is among Women of a Certain Age.

Now I've had it so long it would be difficult to change.

Two giants of American improvisational music.

Their approaches to playing were diametrically opposite, yet they both created music that will still be appreciated hundreds of years from now.

76. I use this DUname for 2 reasons....
1: My name is Richard Steele, and my friends call me "Dick".

2: Back when I found DU in 2004, I couldn't think of a cool
username. But I really just HAD to jump in and start posting,
so I told myself I'd just use my real name TEMPORARILY until
I came up with a DU handle as clever and witty as the ones I
saw when I first lurked here.

3 1/2 years and 24,000 posts later, I've still got NOTHING
in the "clever username" file. I'm almost beginning to think the
"dicksteele" handle may not be temporary.

Almost.

There was either a music journal I can across doing research as an undergrad, or an excerpt from said journal, called "Harmonicon" that I liked a lot, and wrote down. I think it was from Harmonicon IX. I honestly don't remember what it was now, but my duo used the title "harmonicon" as the name of the b-side on our first 7" record. I may have been using it as an aim name or something before that - I don't know which came first, but it is one of the names that I use on teh internets.
