Anybody here into Steampunk?
I love the new trends the kids come up with. This one is especially neat. It's kind of Victorian dress, big Victorian kind of hair, raccoon eyes.

Saw it this morning in the NY Times.

Now I wish someone would come up with a really neat new trend for little old ladies like me. The Victorian kind of is attractive because it covers up so much - which at my age- is a good thing.

1. I'm not into it.
In fact I didn't know it existed as a cultural phenomenon until a couple of weeks ago when I ran into an article about some guy modifying his computer to look old.

It looks pretty neat. I'm not sure I'd go so far as to dress up like a dandy though.

2. like most things, it has decent elements and as a long-time hat wearer, I like that
but I also don't really get into the extremes of any scene, where people go all out.

3. I'm not into the style
but I do like some of the steampunk anime that's come out, such as Last Exile and Steamboy :)

For your further entertainment value, here's wikipedia's List of steampunk works.

4. I think it's hot.
It appeals to the side of me that always wanted to be just a little more punk rock in high school but didn't have the nerve for.

6. LOVE IT!
If I had the time and energy, I'd make over my home office in steampunk style.

7. I've enjoyed a few "Steampunk" novels and stories
but I wasn't aware of the sub-culture described in the NYT story until I read it this morning.

I became aware of it as a movement within Science Fiction.

8. It's amusing to look at
but I don't think I'd want any of it. I'd rather have a nice sleek mac.

9. Doesn't it date to as early as '91, with the Gibson/Sterling...
...novel The Difference Engine? My cool, younger teenage brother gave it to me at the time and I really enjoyed it. Love alternate-history concepts. Didn't think about it much until recently, when I started hearing about Steampunk as a style/lifestyle, etc. Couldn't help but be reminded of that book, which is over 15 years old. Has Steampunk been around that long? (If so, how'd I miss it?) Is that novel part of its foundation?

Personally, I've been a fan of Victorian/Edwardian style, design, etc. for most of my life-- and back in the '90s (in L.A., at least) this seemed also to be connected to the neo-Goth world that some friends of mine were heavily into.

Only connect....

13. You can't be as old as I am. I really kind of like it.
I'm really tired of the worn out, trashy kind of clothes and the jeans that hang around people's knees. Why not have some fun. Victorian was so distinctive.

17. Whoa.
Is there a danger that people who play those games might get lost in them? Or, do you think most people are very aware that they are just imaginary and for fun?

19. That would be one.
I think I would get way too involved in games like that. But, really, does it really hurt anyone if someone gets lost in computer games for a while. There have been times in my life when I would have been better off lost for a while.

20. no, I've never known anyone who got "lost" in either game
that's something the fundies were scaring people with back in the late 70s/early 80s
