4. Everything in the pantry my husband doesn’t like.
This is his MO, clean out the shelves of beans and weird stuff. I try to give meal stuff, pasta and tomato sauce, soup and brown rice. Cereal is a good idea!

2 bags of candy/jellybeans

I'm SUCH the BAD BAD vegan!

9. I just added a package of raisins--you know, like 10 of the little boxes--
and some veggie baked beans. I was shamed by your impressive list. But I must admit, I only gave vegan stuff. Not because I'm dogmatic. I just forget that other people eat that stuff. It makes my tummy turn!

33. I know. I also remembered that I give to our food pantry at least once a month.
The church collects food for the food pantry every communion Sunday. So, I give regularly.

There's meat in my kitchen, right now! Tuna, chicken and bacon!!1!

I know, I'm a horrible example to the world of the no compromise vegan militia. Again.

22. Totally on purpose!
I even made a list (I do lists like, a lot). I laughed at myself as I priced tuna. That shit is expensive, considering.

Cheap, easy, basic, non-perishable nutrition that folks would like and appreciate. I saw Gormy's list below, and I'm angry that I didn't know they sold canned salmon. Salmon!

I'm a horrible person.

7. Nothing. Giving food is a waste of money.
Edited on Fri May-09-08 08:59 PM by Rabrrrrrr
The food banks can buy food at an average of 12 cents a pound, which is about 8-10 times the buying power I have.

I give money.

10. Money's good. The food pantry here often asks for paper goods,
rather than food. So, I'm thinking of tossing in a couple of rolls of paper towels.

13. And HABA stuff.
Food pantries often can't buy those at reduced prices, and often their people really are in very, very serious need of it, and will often (understandably) forgo buying HABA in favor of food. Diapers are often desperately needed as well, though I wouldn't buy them - I'd only buy cloth diapers.

15. Yes, but the point is - whatever amount you spend buying food
could buy 8-12 times as much if you just gave the money to the food bank.

One can of peas, or 12?

I would rather give in a way that results in 12 cans.

21. You make a good point, but
this is about numbers. If the postal carriers left an envelope that asked one to put cash in it that they'd take to food banks, how many would? If they left a flyer with the address to send a donation, how many would?

Folks like you that donate via economic science, yeah, that's great. Getting folks that don't see it that way, or maybe do so to make a successful campaign (like me) takes a little something else.

23. Oh, sure - any giving is better than no giving,
and probably a lot of people don't really think of giving to food banks except when the post office reminds them.

So it's a good thing - and for those who might have older or unwanted food sitting around, it's a good way to pass it on before it goes bad, and for those who don't otherwise think about it, it's a chance to get them involved as well.

I would never stop someone from giving food - but it is important to remind people that money is actually a better thing to give. I work with a local food bank, and they're always in the preference (except for HABA stuff) to have money. It makes their lives much easier not having to stock random crap and take up shelf space displaying one or two items, and so forth, but especially because they can fill 12 times as many shelves with money as they can with food.

Knowing what I know, I don't feel guilty at all for not leaving anything for the mailman. But, I also don't criticize anyone who does.

8. Cans, cans, and more cans.
** tomato sauces
**tuna, salmon
** baked beans
** assorted canned vegetables (green beans, peas and carrots, corn, peas...etc.)
**chicken broth
** gravy (this one may seem weird, but my mother once said it was a big hit at the food bank where she worked)
**PB
**pasta

I double bagged it. My letter carrier says that this is his favorite day of the year.

and some soup, and rice and tea bags (hey you never know) and two jars of peanut butter. I really cleaned out the pantry last night and felt good about doing it.

I left 3 boxes out by the mailbox. Just waiting for my mail carrier to come by...

You probably just bought canned and boxed foods, and didn't go for the pricey extravagant stuff like I did.

Heck, I even put out a bag of ice so that the hungry would have something with which to chill their Champagne.

40. I left Chef Boyardee ravioli
vegetables, spaghetti sauce, Kraft mac n cheese and canned fruit. Those were all the things I had to eat when I was 17 and raising a baby by myself. I used to make the mac n cheese with water and it was not too bad! I did realize that I have to make more of an effort to give at other times during the year. My hat is off to the postal workers for all their hard work yesterday!!
