8. Canadians call them Camp Thieves
A Pileated Woodpecker hangs around here and o/a 6am every day does a salute to Gene Kurpa in the old maple next the house. I'll trade you.

10. Lol at Krupa!
The first time I saw a pileated, I called for my parents to come quick and see the wild turkey. They still razz me about that.

11. They usually are trying to stash food.
It was hell with our old roof -- the shingles were curling up and the jays used the underside spaces as cubbyholes for nuts.
They're pretty comical when they take baths--and they're the only type of bird that I've witnessed bathing in the bird bath. The others use it as drinking water.

14. They stash pecans, almonds, black and English walnuts, and acorns in our yard
We have several small nut and oak trees planted by scrub jays!
They like to hop and peck around in the gutter above our bedroom window just after sunrise, and call to each other. They often take a vigorous bath in our dog's water bowl, or a shower in the sprinkler spray. One bold, big jay used to come in and steal cat kibble near the back door... I think he was feeding his babies.

18. Oh yeah.
One year I made the mistake of hanging corn for the squirrels. The jays loved it and I had volunteer corn stalks all over the yard. Every year we have front row seats for the territorial fight between the mockingbirds and the jays.

There's a lot of entertainment value for the price of some bird seed.

15. May I recommend this website?

I love the ability to listen to the bird calls. I have used that feature several times when I hear a bird and can't identify it by it's song. :)
