2. You do know that every state has folktale "demons"
right?

Just off the top of my head in the surrounding states:

CT: The Leatherman, The Green Lady, Satan's Kingdom apparitions, Newgate ghosts (I live in CT...obviously)
ME: Witch Island
MD: The Burkettsville Witch
NJ: The Jersey Devil
RI: Kickemuit River Ghost Heads, The vampire Mercy Brown
MA: Salem Witches
NY: Too many to name.

8. Closer to the second...
Edited on Wed May-14-08 07:57 AM by Chan790
a civil war era vagrant who roamed the area of western CT, western MA, and eastern NY dressed completely in homemade deerskin leather.

His name was Jules Bourglay and was the son of a semi-wealthy family from Lyons, France who fell madly in love with a very-wealthy young woman named Margaret Laron and was offered the opportunity to prove himself worthy to her in her family's leather business; Margaret rejected his proposal after a purchasing mishap which ruined her family fortune.

Leatherman would refuse offers of a bed or barn only sleeping in a chain of caves of his own choosing, incapable of speech, he grunted like a hog...his odyssey could be precisely predicted and tracked for about 30 years on a very precise 365-mile track taking exactly 34 days, accurate to minutes. Families would leave food and blankets out for him. Over time, these families all happened upon good fortune, becoming some of the wealthiest and most powerful families in New England...making the Leatherman a good-luck totem of sorts.

Now..he appears from time to time...to people lost in the woods, rendering aid from afar and disappears. Sometimes he appears to people in dire straits and observes without lifting a finger. It's kind of a Kismet/karma thing...like some sort of hillbilly southern-New England mysterious stranger.

5. Should I post it in GDP?
At least (most) loungers know enough to see that it's tongue in cheek. In GDP, we'd have an all-out flame war that discussed how the Bigfoot States (WA, OR, ID) are going for Obama, and the lake monster fans would have to be heard from as well.
