"This could be your last catalog!"

Fingerhut.

I've been getting catalogs from them for 30 years, have never bought anything from them and they're always telling me it may be my "last catalog."

How much you want to bet they have a big following in Freeperdom? - "Oh, no! It may be our last catalog from this quality merchandiser! We'd better order something!"

(and yes, I realize "quality merchandiser" is way over your average Freeper's head but I don't know how to talk their language)

Isn't their stuff kind of crappy?

My brother-in-law and his wife gave me and my husband a Pottery Barn gift certificate. We traded it in for some new bed linens, and the catalogs have been streaming in ever since (sometimes three per week). I wish they would threaten to stop sending them.

As I said, I've never bought anything from them. It certainly LOOKS crappy and I wish they'd follow through on their threats and really make this the last catalog.

back in the late 1980s. I was an outbound telemarketer, calling previous customers and trying to sell them more stuff.

Most of our clients fit into the stereotypical Wal-Mart shopper demographic, or those who buy rent-to-own stuff: working-class, lower socio-economic status, many of them retired on fixed incomes. They liked to get stuff from Fingerhut because they could finance it and make low monthly payments. These folks usually didn't have credit cards, and the only credit they could get was through the Fingerhut catalog. Of course, the interest rate was around 30%, but they didn't care because it was theirs for only 60 low monthly payments of $28 each.

I'm not proud of working for them, but at the time it was one of the few jobs I could get that paid higher than minimum wage.

Unless it's a copy of Aristotle's Comedics, however, we shouldn't fear it.

My late MIL got catalogs galore. When she died a few years ago, all the mail was forwarded to us. I've been swimming in catalogues ever since. I'll bookmark this site and get my address off of them as they come in.
