will a swamp cooler work here for me? (Northern CA near the coast)
it's been in the 90's for 3 days (over 100 on Thursday) and I don't want a window a/c unit for somewhat infrequent boughts of heat, i don't want to spend the money for a portable a/c unit (they cost lots more), but they have these portable swamp coolers for about $100 and i'm thinking of getting one. although this is generally a humid place, when we get heat, it's usually quite dry, humidity today was below 25% when it was in the 90s.

what do you think? the problem is that when it gets hot here, there is no air whatsoever especially at night (the hills stay warmer than lower elevation areas at night) during heatwaves here.

hmmm.

1. Would probably help quite a bit.

I used to live in a mobile home near Sacramento. No AC, just the big swamp cooler on the roof. It would keep it 15 degrees cooler then the outside temperature at the cost of some humidity.

That worked great until the temp got to 100+. Not sure how much one of the portable coolers would cool down in comparison.

The trick w/ swamp coolers is to keep a window cracked on the opposite side of the house for airflow, and to keep the humidity from building up in the house.

Good luck!

2. Check out these guys
They explain how it all works: http://www.air-n-water.com/swamp-coolers-evaporative.htm

I bought a portable swamp cooler from 'em last year for my bedroom. Works great.
