Do you think we need to get special shots to go to Cancun, Mexico?
MrShine thinks we might need to, since he needed them for a Belize trip a couple years back. Belize is only a few hundred miles away from Cancun, is his argument.

I think he's over-reacting, big time. We're staying at a 5-star, all-inclusive, couples-only resort that we'll only venture off of a few times. It's not like we're gonna be hanging around in an insect-laden jungle.

Any opinions or advice to offer?

But if you travel south of Playa you won't be able to give blood for a year. If you want to go to a calm but interesting place to snorkel go to Yal-Ku lagoon or check out one of the cenotes

Have a great time

2. My dear Shine!
As long as you stay out of Mexican jails, you should be fine!

Um...and I'm not exactly kidding...

Have a great...and SAFE, time, sweetie!

3. Nope
No shots needed for Cancun. I wouldn't eat the salads there, though-- not even in a 5-star restaurant!! :hi:

4. Passport shots. :)
I'd think about the hepatitis shots, though, if you can get them. Just to be on the safe side.

The CDC recommends HepA, HepB, and Typhoid, plus rabies if you're going to be somewhere off the beaten path. Consider the latter two if you're planning on visiting the pyramids or other similar locations outside of the resort, or if you're prone to eating from street vendors, like I am (well, at least for the typhoid part -- I doubt the street vendors, even the rabid ones, will bite you):

5. Doesn't look like it

Only if you were going to be in rural areas then they seem to recommend a typhoid vaccine. They just recommend being up to date on the routine vaccines, especially HepA for that region. Enjoy your trip!

7. he didn't need shots for belize, and he sure as shit don't need them for cancun
Edited on Tue May-20-08 09:43 PM by pitohui
i have to assume that mrshine is a hypochondriac, never met anyone who even suggested getting "shots" for a trip to belize, that's ridiculous

what would the "shots" even be for?

the only "shots" i've ever gotten for travel have been to primitive areas of africa (yellow fever and hep A)

never have i gotten shots to go to mexico, that's just silliness

unless wait a minute...are you sure he wasn't talking about TEQUILA shots? :-)

11. Yeah, he did need 'em. They kayaked up a river in the jungle
they were out in the boonies. I think his shots were for malaria, maybe hepatitis, too.

14. Very helpful link, thanks honey.
:loveya:

yeah, we're stoked. It'll be our first trip down there and the longest time away from our kids. We're celebrating our 15 yr wedding anniversary, so we figured we deserved the splurge!

9. uh yeah, tequila shots!
Actually, if you're at an all-inclusive and not going in to Chichen Itza or any place like that, you should be a-ok. Have a great trip!

18. Yeah, we were amazed, too.
Myself and the kids didn't have passports, so I figured it would be a 8-10 wk process, so we started back in early March and had them by the middle of the month. MrShine's actually took about a week longer, b/c his was a renewal, too.

Even so, we had them all handled within three weeks, easy.

Amazing.

13. I've been there multiple times and never needed any shots
However, I would recommend a hepatitis B vaccination even if you're not going anywhere. It's not necessary for travel to Cancun though. If you do leave the resort you've got to see Chichen Itza (spell? -- lol in my family we started calling it chicken pizza and that's always want to call it now). It's gorgeous and if you can walk to the top of one of the pyramids the view is breathtaking. Actually, the heat of the jungle is also breathtaking but in a different way. Hope you have loads of fun :)
