The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poetry Break, 5/20/08
Edited on Tue May-20-08 11:08 PM by BlueIris
—from The Divine Comedy
"The Love of God, Unutterable and Perfect"

The love of God, unutterable and perfect,
flows into a pure soul the way that light
rushes into a transparent object.
The more love that it finds, the more it gives
itself; so that, as we grow clear and open
the more complete the joy of loving is.
And the more souls who resonate together,
the greater the intensity of their love,
for, mirror-like, each soul reflects the others.

—Dante
(translated by Stephen Mitchell)

1. But, but, but...
Must refrain from getting nit-picky about logic. This is poetry about theology. :P

My aunt says she used to love to read Dante in Italian. She insists that it does not translate into English, and that there is no point in reading it at all if you won't bother to learn Italian first.

Oh well. I'll enjoy it as well as I can in English, even if I do have a strong desire to nit-pick parts of his logic. :P

2. Interesting...
I'll admit that this is one of the only translations of any part of any writings Dante produced which has moved me at all. I've often heard/read that Dante has only been translated into English very poorly thus far. I don't know. I had a hard time picking something even remotely appropriate for tonight, considering all the shit that went down today.
