Do you wash your walls?

I am doing some spring cleaning. I remember that when my gram did her cleaning, she would always wash the walls. My mom never did, though. Then a few days ago I was reading a blog and the author washes her walls as well. Driven by curiosity, a few times over the years I have run a clean rag with a little cleaner spritzed on it over the surface of a wall, but I never saw it pick up any dirt or anything that made it seem like it needed washing.

Am I missing something? Do walls need to be washed or wiped down on occasion? Am I the only one who doesn't wash walls? Or is wall washing a throwback to the days when the fireplace heated the house, causing soot and ashes to drift through the air and onto the walls thereby creating the need for wall washing in the spring?

Thanks.

14. I must not copycat.
Copycat is the mind-killer. Copycat is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my copycat. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the copycat has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

2. I wash my kitchen and bathroom walls pretty regularly
and the rest of the house whenever the mood strikes me.

I just put lysol on the sponge and wipe the walls near the stove, the windowsills and door frames, near the toilet and tub - I see shmutz on the sponge when I am done.

I use my bare floor attachment on the vaccuum for the rest of the house.

8. Yeah, bathroom and kitchen walls I do for sure.

Also around light switches and doorknobs, any place that tends to get smudges. But I meant more like, do people clean the walls of a room that rarely gets used.

Thanks for the feedback though!

6. Same here. If they get that bad, I just repaint them.
I probably have half an inch of paint on my trim.

11. Yep, I do the baseboards as well when I am washing the floors.

Surprising how dirty those things get, as dirty as the floor oftentimes. Then again my baseboards are wood, so the texture may have something to do with it holding on to dirt.

Thanks!

5. We built our house
eight years ago and have never washed the walls except to clean up the occasional marring I make while moving furniture around. I can't imagine it being necessary. Gravity should take care of the cleaning for you. However every spring I wash the outside siding of the house down with cold water, a sponge and Mr Clean. Now that's some dirty!!

12. Yeah, that's what I have been doing, too.

Cleaning up the noticeable spots, but the rest of it seems fine.

I hear you re: the outside, though. I should really go after my house with a pressure washer this year. Ugh.

16. I don't like using a pressure washer
on the siding. We do have some brick siding but most of it is vinyl. My wife and I make it a fun saturday. Wear grubby clothes, she does low, I do high (on the ladder) and we get thoroughly soaked. And it does make a big difference in the appearance of the house.

18. My house is mostly brick.

I've never washed the outside before, but maybe pressure washing isn't the way to go. I'll have to research the project it before I start it.

I think it will be kind of fun, too. And I am looking forward to seeing what it looks like all cleaned up because the brick has always seemed a little dark to me.

19. Pressure washing
will work fine on the brick. I think its just a little too much "pressure" for vinyl siding. Have a pressure washing party.

15. I have been the past couple of days
I'm doing spring cleaning too. I have messy kids and a slobbery dog so they need it. But it's not something I do very often. I'm not the best housekeeper in the world.

20. Eh, I think that if your house is too clean, your life is too boring.

Unless you have a maid service and a nanny to take care of things while you're out banging the cabana boy.

dust them for cobwebs once in a while. I do wipe the kitchen and bathroom walls but that's a small job.

24. Yes, but I don't recommend it.
It started with a little pen mark on the wall. I washed the area gently and the mark came off. Once it dried, I noticed the spot was a little lighter than the rest of the wall. So I gently washed a little larger area...bad idea. I ended up with a circular light spot. So I washed the rest of the wall and was done with it. Or, so I thought. That whole wall looked lighter than the rest of my walls. So it went from a quick little wipe to this whole weekend project, with a bucket, sponge and a ladder which I had to drive to my parents house (30 miles away) to borrow.

Next time I'm gonna use a magic eraser!

28. Ha ha, yep, I had that same problem.

Figured out that I'm better off repainting over the smudges that don't come off quickly and easily on the first try.
