Can I bitch a bit about gas prices, even though...
Edited on Wed May-21-08 10:47 PM by jasonc
I recently bought a new car with full knowledge of the rising gas prices and the fact the car gets atrocious gas mileage?

Cause you know, gas prices are only high because of the greed of the oil companies and I REALLY wanted this car...

:P

1. Well I can bitch about prices
Even though I have a sports car it gets great mileage (tween 30-34mpg generally) but filling it up, even though its not a big car...Is getting close to $50.

5. Mine gets relatively good gas mileage
a 12 gallon fill up is closing in on $50 for me too.

I get about 24 in town. Much better on the highway so if I do any highway driving, the MPG goes up above 26. The mileage on this car isn't any better than previous vehicle. In fact, I think only my old Saturn had really good gas mileage, about 27 in town, near 40 on the highway.

In truth, there are relatively few vehicles that get 24 MPG in town that I am willing to drive. If I were looking for a car now, gas mileage would be a HUGE factor. Had gas prices been this high two years ago, I probably would have gone with the Honda Fit, which I drove and liked but which was smaller than My Mazda 2. Although next time I buy a car, I would definitely consider a Yaris or something small like that. Maybe a Smart Car if I lived in a larger city. Not sure I want to drive that on the highway.

2. What color is the car?
That makes all the difference in whether or not you have a right to bitch.

Except for the fact that "bitch" is a sexist word and you should be ashamed of yourself for using it.

10. Be glad you aren't British.
I heard on NPR they're paying the equivalent of $12/gallon over there.

Time to invest in bicycle manufacturers!

18. it sucks doesnt it...
the only reason we are paying high gas prices is because of the greed of the US Oil companies selling us gas. That is the ONLY reason. That is the part that makes me mad. If it truly was due to the price of doing business, I would not have a problem with it, but that is not the case here.

it really is frustrating.

24. It is not the $4 dollars per gallon I am so upset about
It is a little but what really frustrates me is that there is no reason for it other than pure greed on the part of the oil companies.

If it was $4 a gallon because there was taxes that paid for things we as a society need, thats different than giving Exxon Mobil the highest pure profit ever recorded for a company...

26. I blame Bush and the Iraq war not the oil companies.
After Saudi Arabia Iraq has the biggest crude reserves.
The country is broke.
Iran also pulling the OPEC strings.

Oil dealers are so shit scared after the US subprime fiasco the only thing they're prepared to invest in bigtime right now is oil.

Because as was demonstrated in Saudi Arabia last week it's the one thing Geprge W Bush can't manipulate, no matter how hard he tries.

27. That may have something to do with the high prices, but...
there is a huge difference between the price of a barrel of oil and the price of gas in this country. The Oil companies are not simply passing on the cost of doing business, they are deliberately charging more than is prudent in order to get as much money out of the consumer as possible, and making life very difficult on most of us.

30. The dollar is so weak because confidence in Bush is at rock bottom.
The markets aren't backing the $ nor property. Oil is the natural investment target because consumption is rocketing in places like China.

The oil companies are making profits from upstream activities but downstream business like refining and gasoline sales remain barely profitable.
